Concerts at the Jones House Begins Friday, June 7, with Strings, Songs, Stories, and a Country Band

June 3, 2013. The Town of Boone is proud to present another summer of Concerts at the Jones House, starting Friday, June 7, at 5:00 p.m. at the Jones House Cultural and Community Center in downtown Boone.

“We have a great line-up in store for this summer, and Friday is no exception,” says Cultural Resources Coordinator, Mark Freed.  “Since it is also a first Friday Art Crawl night, we have an extra group performing, and we are starting the season strong.”

The evening will kick off with the Forget-Me-Nots at 5:00 p.m., followed by songwriter-storyteller, Michael Reno Harrell, and finishing with Williams & Company, a Nashville-based country band.

The Forget-Me-Nots are a Celtic-infused band, featuring sisters Willa and Ledah Finck and Maura Shawn Scanlin on fiddles, accompanied by David Finck on guitar.   The group was officially formed in 2002, but the girls have been playing together since 1999.  With nearly 15 years under their belts, the Forget-Me-Nots write and arrange fantastic fiddle music.  They recently opened for Garrison Keillor at the Holmes Center, but their performances have been fewer in the area.  The girls are now scattered around the country attending schools.

“The Forget-Me-Nots have been part of this series for many years now, and we are so glad they could all be in Boone at the same time to kick off this season,” says Freed.

Award-winning songwriter, storyteller, Michael Reno Harrell last performed at the Jones House in 2011, and he returns this year freshly returned from a California tour.

“Michael Reno Harrell is a real pro,” Freed says.  “He is entertaining and compelling from the moment he steps to the mic until he leaves the stage, or porch in this case.”

Michael Reno Harrell is celebrated for his regionally-influenced songs and stories, which have been described as “Appalachian grit and wit.”  He has been featured at major musical and storytelling festivals across the country, including Merlefest, Walnut Valley Festival, and National Storytelling Festival.  He returns to the Jones House with new recordings and another engaging one-man show.

Williams & Company is a Nashville-based country band, whose drummer, Lucas Moomaw, grew up in Boone.  Singer, songwriter, and band namesake, Alex Williams, met Moomaw and the other members, Daniel Pendergraft and Sam VanFossen, at Belmont University in Fall 2011.

The group brought a diverse mix of influences to the band, from blues to jazz to bluegrass, and they have created an “outlaw” style of honky-tonk country music.  Their album, Williams & Company was favorably reviewed in local press last summer ahead of their July 2012 performance at Murphy’s.  The band returns to Boone to give their first performance at the Concerts at the Jones House.

The Concerts at the Jones House are produced by the Town of Boone and sponsored by the Downtown Boone Development Association, Mast General Store, Footsloggers, MPrints, Stick Boy Bread Co., Melanie’s, and Farmer’s Rentals.  The FREE concerts take place every Friday, starting at 5:00 p.m., rain or shine.  People are encouraged to bring their own chair or blanket.  For more information, including a complete schedule, visit www.joneshousecommunitycenter.org or call (828) 262-4576
