The next two weeks will be extra musical at the Jones House, featuring workshops and concerts with Mike “Lightnin'” Wells and Joe K. Walsh and Sweet Loam.

Lightnin’ Wells will be visiting the Jones House music lessons program, Boone JAMS, on Thursday, and he will be sticking around to offer a public workshop on finger-style blues guitar. The workshop starts at 7:30 on Thursday, while the old-time jam session gets started.

“We will have people playing fiddle tunes in a room or two, but we will designate the front parlor room for Lightnin’ to give the guitar workshop,” says organizer, Mark Freed.

The workshop will last about an hour, and it is geared towards intermediate-level players and above. The old-time jam continues until 11:00 p.m., and both the workshop and jam session are free.

Wells returns to the Jones House on Friday night, following the ASU Homecoming parade, for a house concert performance. The concert is scheduled to start at 7:30, but might start closer to 8:00, depending on how quickly parade traffic disperses.

“We will make sure everyone gets parked and to their seats in the Jones House,” Freed says.

The concert costs $20 per seats, and it is limited to 40 seats. So advanced reservations are encouraged, though open seats will be made available at the door, which opens at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night for the concert.

Next week, the Jones House hosts Joe K. Walsh and Sweet Loam, an acoustic quartet of very talented American roots musicians. The band features the music and song writing of Walsh, a mandolin virtuoso, who is a graduate and faculty member of the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston.

The band includes another Berklee graduate with fiddler John Mailander, another teacher with guitarist Lincoln Meyers, and young gifted bass player, Karl Doty.

“These guys are pushing the envelope of traditional music – expanding the boundaries in familiar feeling ways,” Freed says.

Several members will be giving workshops at the Jones House on the afternoon of Friday October 28, starting at 4:00 p.m., including Walsh (mandolin), Mailander (fiddle), and Meyers (guitar). The workshops are free to participants of the Boone JAMS program and those attending the concert. Others may attend, but must RSVP with Mark Freed at mark.freed@townofboone.net

The Joe K. Walsh and Sweet Loam concert will start at 7:30 on October 28, and seating is similar to the Wells concert – $20 seats with a 40-person limit.
