March 24, 2014. The theme to start off the week seems to be – as Ray’s Weather noted in its forecast discussion – “winter is back.”

Residents of the High Country woke up to chilly temperatures on Monday morning, yet the coldest day in recent past and the foreseeable future is Tuesday, which RaysWeather.com forecasts a low of 16 degrees for Boone and evening snow showers with an accumulation between one to three inches throughout the High Country by midnight.

This is great news for Sugar Mountain Resort, the last winter resort still open for skiing, snowboarding and tubing, and those winter sport enthusiasts craving action on the mountain. The cold weather for late March will prevent more snow from melting and the snow in the forecasts is a bonus.

Sugar Mountain Resort has 19 of its 20 trails open, which are “well covered” with a base of 18 to 70 inches, Kim Jochl of Sugar Mountain Resort said on Monday morning. The tubing lanes of Sugar Mountain Resort are open as well.

“It should be really nice spring skiing tomorrow and Wednesday and even into the weekend,” Jochl said.

March Madness discounts apply. Skiers and snowboarders enjoy 25 percent savings on lift tickets, rental equipment and lessons for the remainder of the winter season. Plus, Winter Value Packages are discounted at 40 percent.

Jochl mentioned that while Sugar Mountain Resort didn’t have a definitive closing date, the resort was “shooting” to close this weekend depending on weather.
