Feb. 12, 2014. With the winter storm looming, weather closings in the High Country are beginning to mount. Of course, Watauga County Schools, Avery County Schools, Mountain Pathways and Two Rivers Community schools cancelled school on Wednesday and will likely close on Thursday as well.

Appalachian State University announced that it was closing at noon, and the Watauga Campus of Caldwell Community College cancelled its classes on Wednesday.

According to a snowfall time map by the National Weather Service, snow is expected to arrive in Watauga early morning. Ray’s Weather forecasts 12+ inches of snow on the eastern part of Northwestern North Carolina and eight to 12 inches on the western portion of Northwestern North Carolina “when it’s all done.”

The winter storm warning from the NWS expires at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
