On the first day of early voting extending throughout the county, including on the campus of Appalachian State University, Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, spoke to an estimated crowd of 550 on the college campus.

Boone Mayor Rennie Brantz opened the event at Legends. Brantz voiced his support of Clinton, who he said had the “values to serve as president and to keep us safe,” and encouraged folks who hadn’t yet voted to vote early.

“I hope you vote right away,” Brantz said.

Three female college students and supporters of the Democrats and Clinton spoke out at the event. One of the speakers said she had an abortion at 18 and said that women’s reproductive rights were a core concern for her. Another student touted that the Watauga County Democratic Party registered 4,000 voters leading up to the election so far.

Chelsea Clinton opened her speech talking about early voting, which began last week and features same-day registration.

“I am also excited to be in a place where you have early voting. I am a little bit jealous actually cause I live in New York,” Clinton said. “It’s sort of a bum deal.”

Clinton expressed her excitement for those who had already voted for her mom.

“Hopefully more will take the opportunity to do so today at the [Plemmons] Student Union,” Clinton said. “I don’t think any of us want to wake up on Nov. 9 and think we could have done more.”

The campaigns of Hillary Clinton and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will continue through Election Day, which is Tuesday, Nov. 8 – and both have had their fair share of negative press recently what with Trump’s lewd remarks caught on tape and the daily, slow drip of thousands of emails associated with the Clinton campaign by Wikileaks. In fact, at the end of August before the release of the aforementioned, both candidates ranked as the “most unfavorable candidates ever.
