The October/November issue of the free High Country Magazine is out on newsstands now. Whether intentional or not, this issue celebrates a number of organizations working for the good of the community.

The issue features articles on the High Country Charitable Foundation helping the less fortunate in Avery County; the F.A.R.M. Café feeding, as its namesake suggests, all regardless of means; ABC Stores distributing profits back to taxpayers; and the May Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at Lees-McRae College.

The cover story, however, is about the day that Miami football came to town. This was a big moment in the history of Appalachian State football. The University of Miami is one of the traditional powers in FBS football, and the first to play a game in Boone.

Nearly 35,000 people attended the matchup at Kidd Brewer Stadium and a million more watched on ESPN, which aired the game live. While the end result wasn’t what Mountaineers fans hoped for, the home matchup with the Hurricanes proved that App State is a legit football program.

Also, see farewells for Marcia Greene, who retired after 20 years as marketing director at Chetola Resort, and Officer Mike Foley, who served as the beat cop on King Street in downtown Boone since 1999.
