Celebrate Habitat’s Partnership with High Country Home Builders on Monday

By Jessica Isaacs | jessica@highcountrypress.com

Habitat for Humanity of Watauga County recently broke ground on its latest project, and its friends at the High Country Home Builders Association have been an essential part of the process.

The two organizations are working more closely together than ever before, and you’re invited to help them celebrate their progress.

This year, the HCHBA has gone above and beyond to help Habitat reach its goals with the latest project, providing an unprecedented amount of materials and labor during the 2016 construction season.

Not only have several HCHBA members supplied more than $15,000 worth of materials for the next home in Habitat’s GreenWood development, they will also provide the labor to put those products into action at the jobsite.

On Monday, July 25, join the High Country Home Builders Association for its monthly meeting for a fun opportunity to get to know the folks who are making this summer’s Habitat project possible.

Starting at 5 p.m. at the Habitat Restore, 1200 Archie Carroll Road in Boone, this meeting will be open to the public and will highlight several HCHBA members who have provided the materials to construct this year’s Habitat home. Those sponsors include 84 Lumber, Blevins Building Supply and New River Building Supply.

While you’re there, say hello to these guys and learn why they do what they do. You’ll also enjoy a food truck, a drink from Appalachian Mountain Brewery, live music and family-friendly fun.

In other Habitat news:

Watauga Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Alex Hooker announced today that Watauga county local Allison Jennings has been named as Director of Development for the nonprofit. Jennings will be working with fundraising and marketing efforts for Watauga Habitat. “As we grow and reach further into the community to help provide affordable housing solutions for low-income Watauga County residents, we feel Allison is just what we need. Her passion for helping people, coupled with her nonprofit experience, will be a great asset to the organization,” said Mr. Hooker.

Jennings was recently the Food and Nutrition Coordinator for Hospitality House of Boone and the co-founder of the Western Watauga Food Outreach project. She has been a strong advocate for those struggling with food insecurity and addressing the needs of people facing poverty. “I am thrilled to be a part of a team that works to provide decent housing for all. This is a natural fit for me as my mission in life is to help others and my vision is to make sure that happens”, said Jennings.

About Watauga County Habitat for Humanity

  • Watauga County Habitat for Humanity builds homes in partnership with qualifying partner families and the community. We then sell the homes at no profit affordable mortgages to partnering families. And we equip our partner families with the knowledge and tools to be successful homeowners.
  • For twenty five years, Watauga County Habitat for Humanity has been helping hardworking families achieve their dream of homeownership. We have built more than 25 homes, help transform our community, and given our families hope.
  • The average cost to build a Habitat home in Watauga County is $100,000. The current payment on a Habitat mortgage – including taxes, insurance and homeowner association fees – is $450.
  • As rent continues to rise, Watauga Habitat offers families the stability of a home of their own with predictable payments to help them achieve not only the dream of homeownership, but the other dreams they have for themselves and their families. Homeownership improves educational outcomes and health. It offers the opportunity to be a part of a neighborhood and a community. And it gives them a chance to build their savings and a financially secure future. We are there for them every step of the way to make sure they’re ready to buy and have the support they need to keep it.
  • We have two approved families and this campaign will help raise the capital needed to begin construction in April for the first of those two homes.
  • Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) mission: Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.
  • HFHI vision: A world where everyone has a decent place to live.
