Cash 5 Jackpot, Three Instant Tickets Bring Big Wins, Powerball Jack Pot Jumps To $54.9M

Sept. 1, 2014. A Carolina Cash 5 jackpot winner and three big instant scratch-off winners highlight a week that brought more than $18.5 million in prizes to lottery players across the state.

The largest win of the week went to Robert Gallen, a retired textile plant engineer from Casar in Cleveland County. Gallen plans to use the $458,171 jackpot he won playing Carolina Cash 5 to purchase a second home in the mountains and save for his granddaughter’s future. {Read Story}

Sharafe Salah Abdel Jawad of Wallace is the latest player to win the top prize in the $500 a Week for Life! instant scratch-off game. Jawad chose the lump sum option and received a check for $244,968 after state and federal taxes were withheld.{Read Story}

High Point resident Nasir Arif won $150,000 top prize in the Caesars instant scratch-off game.  Arif scratched off the lucky $5 ticket after purchasing it at City Exxon on West Burton Avenue in High Point. {Read Story}

Francisco Licona, a construction worker from Charlotte, is the fifth and final player to claim the $100,000 top prize in the Ultimate Crossword game. After state and federal taxes were withheld, Licona received a check worth $69,201. {Read Story}

Since Thursday, Aug. 21, lottery players won more than $14.5 million playing instant games and more than $4 million playing draw games. Twelve prizes awarded were worth between $10,000 and $50,000. In alphabetical order by the winner’s hometown, they are:

Friday’s Mega Millions jackpot is an estimated $20 million if taken as an annuity or $12 million if taken as a lump sum. In Tuesday’s Mega Millions drawing, 19,087 tickets won prizes ranging from $1 to $500, totaling $53,608. In the Aug. 22 drawing, 46,676 tickets won $172,187 in prizes ranging from $1 to $25,000.
