Carlton Gallery Welcomes Three New Artists to Group Exhibition, On Display Through July 15

Carlton Gallery continues its 33rd Spring Group Exhibition with an emphasis on the art of three new artists – Dottie Leatherwood, Eddie Kent Tallent and Lisa Boardwine. This exhibition also features the outstanding work of the gallery’s local, regional and national artists working in painting, glass, wood, sculpture, clay, fiber and jewelry.

Dottie Leatherwood renders the landscape in oil with layers of vibrant color and energetic brushstrokes. She prefers to paint on location or plein air where she gets a feel for her subject matter. Her larger studio paintings are usually done from these sketches, studies and photographs she has taken.

“Painting to me is about capturing and preserving the emotion and energy of a moment in time with simple instruments of brush and paint,” Leatherwood said. “Having grown up on the coast, I always draw my inspiration from nature and the bright clear light I grew up with.”

Art has always been a passion for Leatherwood – from a childhood drawing horses and dogs to studying art in college. After a business of painting wall murals and custom finishing furniture, she decided to return to her love of painting. Leatherwood has exhibited in many juried and group exhibitions and is represented by several southeast galleries. She has studied under nationally-known artists and continues to take every opportunity to become a better painter.

The landscapes of Eddie Kent Tallent project his deep affinity for locations and objects which embody a sense of mystery and solitude.

“My subject matter is chosen for its capacity to possess secrets that only one’s inner spirit can aid the eye in perceiving – something primeval and archetypal in origin, yet ephemeral, obscure and often over looked or ignored,” Tallent said.

In his paintings, which are executed in a variety of media including oil, pastels, watercolor and graphite, Tallent strives to capture more than the physical characteristics of a particular setting. He often rearranges or introduces compositional elements, colors, textures and values that are arbitrary to casual perception. The individual elements — stones, water, and trees — become surrogates for a more allegorical expression. Tallent intends his art work to transcend superficial or facile depictions of nature. He hopes that the viewer of his paintings will find their own state of serenity or solitude and experience a renewed sense of individuality.

Tallent earned a BFA with honors in Fine Arts/Painting from the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. After a career in higher education administration and conducting private art classes and workshops, he now devotes his career full-time to his art.

The abstract expressionistic work of Lisa Boardwine comes from a subconscious and intuitive process. She records her passions and energy and her paintings are an expression of her soul and experiences. Boardwine’s paintings consist of layering textures, marks and color to create a history surface.

Her recent travels to Italy with exposure to the eroding nature of ancient architecture are a factor and influence in her latest work which is exhibited in the gallery.

“I build up and tear down, excavating to recreate a sense of the mysterious through many layers of media,” Boardwine said. “In this process, I cherish the freedom I have found to experiment, express and explore the world through my work.”

The non-objective abstracts of Boardwine are represented by several galleries and art centers. She has won awards in juried shows and her work is in private and corporate collections.
