Oct. 14, 2014. During this season as the High Country landscape weaves brilliant colors of autumn, and a chill is in the air, the weaving also takes many forms in wearables, paintings and basketry at Carlton Gallery. The 32nd Autumn Group Exhibition continues through Nov. 22 along with the “Art songs of the Heart Exhibit” by Toni Carlton.
The gallery features wearable art to colorfully warm body and soul in the form of hats by Myra Tannehill, scarves by Carolyn Glazener, felted wool hats and scarves by Vasanto, Venus hand-woven cotton jackets, coats and vests, Trimdin reversible, Jackets and three quarter length coats, along with knittd Ponchos and Ruanas by Princy art.
Hand woven Mobius shawls by Nancy Roberson allow freedom of movement to ones arms while covering ones shoulders. They are woven with complementary colors in each section.
Purses and frolicsome little bags by Maruca and Erda mix up the fun with colors and fabric. They are functional as well as fashionable.
Lynn Shallis has taken the art of basketry to a highly refined and sophisticated level. Her use of color and design sets her artistry apart from traditional basket making. “Color, shape and size each play their part..my art is a gift from God and I can only hope that the end project is pleasing to him and to the viewer.” Shallis says. Her life-size needle-felted “Green Hare” brings light and humor to all visitors.
Toni Carlton’s “Art Songs of the Heart” exhibition features paintings with texture of ancestral patterns of the fabric of all life are blended with hand woven threads shared between generations. “The hand-woven fabric offers the observer to “see beyond” what appears to be to what can be experienced and transformed through the sacred voice of the heart.” Carlton says. Each canvas begins with a song in calligraphy that may be seen or unseen. The following layers combine a technique called touch drawing, painting and hand-woven fibers representing many prayers for peace. “It has been over 20 years since I have used weaving as an art form so to actually weave each thread as a prayer knowing it will become an integral part of a larger mixed media painting on canvas is coming full circle to connect me to my heritage.” Carlton says. This exhibition will be featured through Nov. 22.
