In the late winter of 2014, a water heater malfunction created water damage on all three floors of the Avery County Humane Society. Remediation has restored most of the shelter, although the flooring in the dog area still needs to be repaired.

The fumes from the materials used are highly toxic, requiring all dogs to be evacuated while repairs are underway.

The repairs are scheduled to begin on May 25 and are expected to take a week to complete.

“We’ve been trying our best to keep our intakes at a minimum and promote adoptions all month. We need to reduce the population before the 25th” says Executive Director Bruce Malfatone. “Effective immediately, all adult dogs are ‘Name Your Own Price!'”

“Our hopes are to have every dog adopted. Those that aren’t will be transported to a no kill shelter, boarded locally or fostered by members of our community” says Charlene Calhoun, shelter manager. “Public support and patience is needed while the repairs take place. All intakes will be postponed until the repairs are completed as no dogs will be allowed inside the building.

If you are able to foster a dog for one week please contact the Humane Society at 828-733-2333 or averyhumanesociety@att.net.
