Jan. 24, 2014. On Jan. 24, the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum will host a grand opening and reception for their newest exhibit, “There’s No Business Like Snow Business: History of Skiing in the High Country.”

BRAHM logoThe grand opening reception will begin at 5 p.m. and will continue until 7 p.m. at the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum located in downtown Blowing Rock at 159 Chestnut Street.

Light refreshments will be served and the grand opening is free of charge and open to the public.

The new exhibit features a look back for visitors at the development of the region’s booming ski industry and winter tourism through photographs, archival materials, equipment and gear, resort histories, personal recollections, and other artifacts.

“We have a lot of photographs from Appalachian Ski Mtn and Beech Mountain,” said Allison Wonsick, communications coordinator for the museum.

“We have framed articles about the history of the mountains, equipment like ski boots, ski poles and jackets and we even have two videos on display. One is an oral history interview of Grady Moretz and the other is a clip from 1969 of the North Carolina skiing being introduced on TV.”

The exhibit is housed in the Historical Objects Gallery in the upstairs portion of the museum. All of the objects being showcased are on loan from the different ski mountains in the area.

Along with coinciding with the booming ski season this year, the exhibit grand opening also runs alongside Blowing Rock WinterFest.

The exhibit will be up for viewing from the grand opening on Friday through May 31.
