Bradley T. Adcock to Lead ASU’s Board of Trustees

Oct. 2, 2014. Bradley T. Adcock of Cary has been elected to lead Appalachian State University’s Board of Trustees as chairman. Alice Roess of Blowing Rock has been elected vice chair and M. Lee Barnes Jr. of Durham has been elected secretary.

Each was elected to a one-year term of office.

Adcock is a 1976 graduate of Appalachian.

“I could never have imagined this privilege when I arrived on campus at Appalachian in the fall of 1972 with one suitcase and a clock radio,” Adcock said of his leadership position on the board.

“Appalachian over the years has given me so much, it’s always an honor to be able to give something back to my alma mater.”

He retired Sept. 30 as vice president for government affairs after a 36-year career with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina.

Adcock served on the UNC Board of Governors from 1997-2009. He was reappointed to his first four-year term on Appalachian’s Board of Trustees in 2009 and a second four-year term in 2013. He served as vice chairman of the Chancellor Search Committee and has helped lead activities associated with the university’s fundraising effort, the Campaign for Appalachian.

“Next summer I will have completed my 20th consecutive year of having the great privilege and opportunity to serve higher education on either the Board of Trustees at Appalachian or the UNC Board of Governors,” Adcock said.

Adcock received the Alumni Council’s Outstanding Service Award in 2010 and the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Alumnus Award in 1999. Adcock received a Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa from Appalachian in May 2014.

Roess was first appointed to a four-year term in 2009 and reappointed to a second term in 2013. One of the university’s top individual donors, she is an active volunteer in civic, charitable and social organizations, serving as an officer, director or member of various committees in both the Blowing Rock and St. Petersburg, Fla. communities.

Roess moved permanently to Blowing Rock from Florida in January 2008. She received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Appalachian’s Walker College of Business in May 2011.

Barnes is the president and director of M.M. Fowler Inc. Before that he was a sales development representative for Shell Oil Company. Barnes graduated from Appalachian in 1990 with a degree in business administration. He also has a master’s degree in business administration from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.

He founded the Lee Barnes Scholarship Program at Appalachian in 2012. He was appointed to a four-year term on Appalachian’s Board of Trustees in 2013.
