You know the old joke, “In dog beers I’ve only had…?” Well in leap years, HCPress.com is only 1 year old.
On Feb. 29, 2012, HCpress.com was born. The local news and events website evolved from the High Country Press, a popular weekly newspaper that stopped printing because of the digital age. No longer do people walk to the newspaper stand to figure out what’s happening in their community or around the world; they turn on their devices, whether it be a laptop, smart phone, tablet – or whatever else some whiz thinks of in the future.
In these four years – or, if you’ll continue to indulge us, one leap year – HCPress.com is the most-read news site in the High Country, according to Alexa, a company that provides commercial web traffic data and analytics. Since inception, we’ve had more than 10 million page views (10,154,329 to be exact) as of Monday morning – and nearly five million visits, according to Google Analytics.
These numbers seem pretty impressive, especially considering that a staff of four (with help from some awesome interns and freelancers) has taken on the World Wide Web – in addition to our magazines, visitor guides and their digital companions.
So why was HCPress.com born on Feb. 29? Well, publisher Ken Ketchie was being cute; plus, it gives us something to write about on Leap Day.
Instead of boasting more about our publications, we’ll leave you with this viral story, about a father and son, who unlike us, didn’t choose to be born on Leap Day.
Today, Fred Shekoufeh and his son, Eric, turn 15 and 5, respectively, even though they’ve been on this Earth for many more years. The odds of a father and son both being born on Leap Day aren’t nearly the same as winning the Power Ball Jackpot, but it’s still pretty rare.
