The Boone Town Council will discuss the acquisition of land in closed session at its meeting on Thursday evening. The properties in question total more than 58 acres and are valued at more than $1.2 million.

According to the meeting’s agenda, town staff will meet in closed session on this particular item to establish, or to instruct the public body’s staff or negotiating agents concerning the position to be taken by or on behalf of the Town in negotiating the price and other material terms of a contract or proposed contract for the acquisition of real property for Watauga County PINs 2921-11-2162-000 (Mary Ann Bolick, Trustee), 2921-10-2748-000 (Lawrence Dale Graham, Trustee), 2920-19-6977-000 (Katie Bolick) and 2921-10-2179-000 (Katie Bolick).”

The highlighted property is one of the four mentioned in the meeting packet. The property borders Brookshire Park.

The total acreage of the four properties is 58.23 acres and the appraised land and building value of those properties by the Watauga County Tax Office adds up to more than $1.2 million.

See more details of the tracts below.

The properties border and are located in between county-owned recreation land known as Brookshire Park and Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation, located of U.S. 421. All four properties are in the Boone Fire Service District.

Three of the properties border the New River.

In previous meetings, the Boone Town Council has directed town staff to keep an eye open for potential recreation lands that it could purchase in order to preserve green space. On Wednesday, most of town staff and the Boone Town Council were attending retreats prior to budget season and were unavailable to talk on Wednesday afternoon.

About a year ago in closed session, the Boone Town Council discussed purchasing land atop Howard’s Knob, which might have included the famous climbing boulders, according to former Mayor Andy Ball at the time. This 70-acre property is still on the market for $3.8 million.
