Boone Town Council Hears Update From The NCNR On New River Stream Restoration Project Thursday

Mark S. Kenna

Oct. 18, 2013. The New River stream restoration project is set to begin construction in March to April of next year, George Santucci, executive director for the National Committee for the New River (NCNR), said at the Boone Town Council meeting Thursday night.

Contractors concerned with the winter weather helped to set the construction date. Specifically the chance of experiencing rain events similar to the downpour of this January would prevent any kind of construction. The federal government shutdown caused the Army CORPS of Engineers to cease working for a few weeks delayed some of the progress.

The project is estimated to be completed by August to September of 2014.

This is the largest project in scope and scale that the NCNR has undertaken in Boone, Santucci said.

Just this past month the NCNR helped to restore Hodges Creek, which runs next to the Animal Emergency & Pet Care Clinic of the High Country off N.C. 105.

The NCNR was also responsible for the stream restoration at the location of Appalachian Mountain Brewery.
