Boone Service League Brings the 80’s Back to Boone with Totally 80’s Party Fundraiser, Apr. 8

By Katie Benfield

On Saturday, Apr. 8, the Boone Service League will be hosting a Totally 80’s Party at the Blowing Rock Conference Center from 7-11 p.m.

“We wanted to do something different,” Fuschia Moss of the Boone Service League said. “We just wanted to do a fundraiser that was going to be exciting and fun.”

The fundraiser can be expected to be full of everything 80’s with music, costumes, games and activities, as well as food that will take you right back to those wonder years.

“There will be a photo booth, arcade games, a Pac-man machine, lots of dancing and activities,” Moss said. “We’ll also have a full-on Little Debbie bar with like Twinkies and Zebra Cakes.”

Along with Little Debbie cakes, according to Moss there will also be candy, such as candy cigarettes and 80’s pop rocks to bring back wonderful memories.

However, that isn’t the only food that will be present. Red Moon Catering is providing delicious food for each of the attendees.

Boone Photo Booth will be present to document your relived 80’s memories, and DJ Dave Banks will also be there to party and provide some bumping tunes straight from the 80’s.

“The event takes place in a gym too,” Moss said. “It’s going to be like the high school dance in Sixteen Candles.”

Although the event is going to be jam-packed with 80’s fun and games, it is also important to remember that it is a fundraiser for a good cause. There will be a live auction that begins around 8 p.m. with Jesse Miller serving as the auctioneer. Auction packages include things such as resort stays, Disney World passes, ski passes, concert and festival tickets, arts and entertainment events and so much more.

However, after the auction there will be more exciting games and activities, so be prepared to have a blast! A costume contest will take place at some point during the event, although Fuschia stated that it isn’t required for anyone to come in costume.

“It’s encouraged for people to dress like they are from the 80’s, but we don’t require it,” Moss said. “We would rather you come as you are than not come at all.”

The Boone Service League was established in 1957, and it is an all-volunteer women’s civic organization that continues to serve the High Country in any way that it can. This includes giving grants to various organizations throughout the area, providing financial assistance when needed and helping out even in small ways, such as supplying a child with a new pair of shoes or helping a family pay rent for the month.

“This event is our major fundraiser for the year,” Moss said. “All of the money that we raise from it goes right back into the community in any way that it can.”

The Boone Service League, using the money raised from this fundraiser, will have a huge impact in the community, whether it’s giving out scholarships to high school seniors or doing Meals on Wheels once a month. The BSL is constantly and consistently trying to provide support and assistance wherever it can throughout the High Country.

The Totally 80’s Party is going to be chocked full of exciting activities, music and games, with the night ending in goodie bags that are full of all kinds of 80’s paraphernalia.

“The goodie bags will have things like shutter glasses and jelly bracelets,” Moss said. “It’s all very 80’s.”

Tickets are $45 each and you can purchase them online or at the door. The event is 21 and up only.
