Town Welcomes The Public To The Boone Post Office Grand Opening Sunday Oct. 27, 3-6 PM

Oct. 8, 2013. Last night, Boone Town Council set a date for the grand opening of the renovated post office in downtown Boone for Sunday, Oct. 27, at 3-6 p.m.

The grand opening will feature speakers Mayor Loretta Clawson, architect Randy Jones and Boone Planning and Inspections Director Bill Bailey starting at 4 p.m.

“It’s really turned out beyond my expectations on what we were able to do,” Randy Jones, architect for the project, said.

April though June of this year there were pre-final and final inspections of the renovations, Jones said, adding that Boone Planning and Inspections department moved into its offices on the June 5.

Final walk through of the post office took place on Aug. 28

Beside keys and a plastic laminate repair in the main conference room, the project is “99.8 percent” finished, Jones said.

Of the $50,000 allocated for contingency expenses, $37,495 will not be used on the post office renovation project.

Council Member Rennie Brantz called the post office the “jewel in the crown.”

Renovation of the post office began in May 2012 after U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) lobbied to keep 234 rural post offices open because of the “economic and social benefits” post offices provide.

Greene Construction was awarded the bid for the renovation for the downtown post office at a cost of $1,189,454 in the spring of 2012. While the U.S. Post Office will still reside inside the building, the basement was renovated to house the Boone Planning and Inspections department.
