On Jan. 25, 2017 at approximately 9 a.m., an armed robbery was reported on Stoneybrook Court in Boone. The victim reported he had been robbed by a masked man with a gun. The suspect forced his way into the victim’s apartment and took the victim’s wallet before fleeing the scene. Officers responded to the scene quickly; however, they were unable to locate the suspect on this date. The area of the crime was processed for both forensic and physical evidence by Detectives. Several items of evidence were collected including latent shoeprints, possibly belonging to the suspect.

On Friday, Feb. 10, 2017, a Boone Police Officer stopped a motorist for a traffic violation. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Jalen Raynard Smith. Smith was found to have outstanding arrest warrants for failure to appear in court in Cabarrus County. Smith was arrested for the outstanding warrants. A search of Smith’s vehicle revealed he was in possession of approximately (2) ounces of marijuana, (30) dosage units of a schedule II controlled substance, drug paraphernalia, (3) firearms and a large amount of US Currency. Boone Police Detectives were called to assist in this investigation. Evidence of the armed robbery was also located inside Smith’s vehicle.

“Our Detectives seized more than one pair of shoes from the suspect. The tread pattern on these shoes will be compared to the shoeprints taken at the scene, in an effort to determine if these shoes match the shoeprints found at the crime scene,” said Boone Police Lieutenant and Investigations Division Commander Chris Hatton

Boone Police Detectives were granted a search warrant for Smith’s residence. During the search, Detectives located more evidence of the armed robbery, as well as, another (5) ounces of marijuana, nearly a pound of Butane Hash Oil (BHO), and items of drug paraphernalia.

“This was a very serious crime. Drugs, guns and violence go hand-in-hand far too often. Our officers did a fine job on this case and I am quite proud of their work on this case,” said Boone Police Chief Dana Crawford.
