June 3, 2014. Stephen Clopton of Boone is the latest player to claim a big prize playing Carolina Cash 5. His Quick Pick ticket matched all five numbers in the Jan. 13 drawing, winning the $581,760 jackpot.
After state and federal taxes were withheld, Clopton received a check for $402,578. He purchased the lucky ticket, which beat odds of 1 in 575,757, at the Wilco on N.C. 105 in Boone.
Ticket sales have made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $3.3 billion for the state. Net proceeds are used for prekindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, teachers’ salaries in grades K-3, school construction, digital learning initiatives, need-based college scholarships and financial aid.
