Boone JAMS Offers Music Lessons for Kids and Adults at the Jones House Cultural and Community Center in Boone

Aug. 6, 2013. The Town of Boone and Downtown Boone Development Association are glad to offer music lessons for kids and adults at the Jones House Cultural and Community Center in downtown Boone on Thursday afternoons, starting Aug. 22.

JonesHouse-93 (800x533)Boone JAMS features weekly lessons in fiddle, guitar, banjo, mandolin and ukulele taught in small groups by local musicians steeped in old-time and bluegrass traditions. The 45-minute lessons take place in the Jones House starting at 4:30, 5:30 or 6:30 p.m., depending on the instrument and playing level. Children ages 7 and older and adults are welcome to enroll.

Class featured in the upcoming session will include beginner through intermediate fiddle, beginner guitar, finger-style guitar, beginner and intermediate banjo, how to accompany singing with guitar or banjo, beginner mandolin and ukulele. Instruments are available for rent, or students may use their own instruments. 

Instructors include some of the area’s finest old-time and bluegrass musicians, including John Cockman, Cecil Gurganus, Deborah Jean Sheets, Trevor McKenzie, Brandon Holder and more. 

Students can enroll one or more five-lesson session beginning on Aug. 22 and continuing through December.

Session A: Aug. 22, 29, Sept. 5, 12 and 19

Session B: Sept. 26, Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24

Session C: Nov. 7, 14, 21, Dec. 5 and 12

Tuition for children ages 7-17

  • $35 for one session (5 lessons)
  • $50 for two sessions (10 lessons)
  • $75 for all three (15 lessons)

Additional scholarship assistance may be available upon request. 

Tuition for adults

  • $50 for one session (5 lessons)
  • $80 for two sessions (10 lessons)
  • $120 for all sessions (summer AND fall – 15 lessons)

Instruments are available to rent for $10 per session or $20 for two or three sessions.  This program is supported by a North Carolina Arts Council’s TAPS grant.
