Boone Clean Up Day Held Saturday, Sept 20; Marks Start of the Two Week Statewide 2014 Fall Litter Sweep

Sept. 18, 2014. The Boone Public Works Department will host the bi-annual Boone Clean-Up Day on Saturday, Sept. 20. Residents are invited to help revive the Town of Boone by liberating the streets and streams of trash and recyclable materials.

imgresSaturday marks the beginning of the two week long “2014 Fall Litter Sweep” ending Oct. 4. The Litter Sweep is a statewide roadside cleanup that takes place every April and September. Last April, a record breaking 22 tons of litter was removed throughout North Carolina.

“The success of Litter Sweep is based upon the volunteers participating statewide,” said North Carolina Transportation Secretary Tony Tata.

Without the participation of Boone residents, the statewide litter sweep will not reach its full potential. More than 200 participants work together locally to make this day a success.

“Each Clean-Up Day, participants collect approximately one ton of garbage and 500 lbs of recycling,” said Shannon Isaacs, Boone’s community improvement officer.

“The town participates during the entire two-week Litter Sweep” Isaacs continued, “and town residents receive an additional curbside pickup at no charge.”

Groups, individuals and public organizations are encouraged to join in the effort to beautify Boone. The clean up will run from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sept. 20. Volunteers may participate by cleaning areas of their choosing or contacting the Boone Public Works Department to be placed at a location. The complimentary roadside removal is available by calling the Public Works Department.

A contest for “The Most Unusual Litter” will also be held. The Town of Boone will award the winner with a monetary prize of up to $100. All citizens are eligible. To enter, contenders must bring their unusual litter, found within city limits, to the Boone Public Works Center on the day of the Clean-Up.

To register for the event, call Shannon Isaacs at 828-268-6230 or stop by the Boone Public Works Center located at 321 E. King Street. Clean up supplies will be available at this location on or before Sept. 20.
