Blue Ridge Community Theatre Offers Basic Acting, Theatre Classes for Adults in April, May

By Jesse Wood

The Blue Ridge Community Theatre is offering something new this spring: beginning acting and theatre classes for adults.

The six-week class starts on Monday, April 13 and runs through Monday, May 18. Classes take place on Monday evenings in the Boone Mall from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

“This acting class is brand new to us. We’ve had several people say, ‘Hey, I’ve always been interested but never had training and don’t know [how to begin learning acting],’” Kathleen Rowell, a member of the board of directors for Blue Ridge Community Theatre, said.

The Blue Ridge Community Theatre started in 1976 and was the first theatre in the High Country. It plans to perform a show in the fall, but the production hasn’t been selected yet.

Trimella Cheney from the ASU Theatre and Dance Department (and formerly from the Watauga High School theatre department) and Janet Speers of the Peforming Arts Studies Department at Lees-McRae College are teaching the class.

Rowell said Cheney and Speers have more than 60 years of experience teaching and directing.

No previous experience is needed.

“This class will offer a variety of experiences such as intro to theater, monologues, movement, and stage presence,” an announcement of the class states. “This is also an excellent way to improve public speaking.  The classes will be informal and fun, no one is getting graded! This is for adults who have aways had an interest in theater and want to learn more.”

The six weeks of instruction costs $100, and the class will be limited to 12 people.

Registration forms will be at the Incredible Toy Company, which can be reached at 828-264-1422.
