The Blowing Rock Presents First Time Ever Special Event, Shagging at the Rock Takes Place Aug. 12

By Katie Benfield

On August 12, a new musical event will be hitting the High Country with full force!

Shagging at the Rock is an up-and-coming event with legendary beach music pioneers that will be taking place at the most renowned attraction in Blowing Rock – The Blowing Rock!

The event begins, rain or shine, with the gates openings at 10 a.m. the day of. Food and drinks will be sold on site.

“The Blowing Rock Elementary School will be selling soft drinks and water, and all proceeds from that will be going directly to the school,” Charlie Sellers, Proprietor of The Blowing Rock, said. “There will also be hotdogs, hamburgers and barbecue for sale from Kit’s in the Pit BBQ here in Blowing Rock.”

The music will begin at 1:00 p.m. with The Tams with The Magnificents following at 2:30 p.m., Eric and the Chill Tones at 4:00 p.m. and The Original Drifters at 5:30 p.m.

“I felt like a lot of people at the beach might be tired of the heat and would like to travel to the mountains and hear some old beach music,” Sellers said.

According to Sellers, beach music was chosen as the theme due to the fact that the annual music festival, taking place on September 16, focuses on Americana and Bluegrass.

“A lot of the people we have visiting The Blowing Rock are familiar with the old beach music, and it has been relevant to the NC, SC and VA areas,” Sellers said. “We felt that it would be something different that would bring people up here from other states.”

The surge in people coming to visit the High Country, especially to take part in a fun-filled day of beach music and beautiful scenery, brings revenue to the town in the form of hotel rooms, restaurant visits and shopping.

“It’s a win-win for the community,” Sellers said.

If someone who is wanting to attend the Shagging at the Rock but don’t want to drive, shuttles are being offered to pick up attendees and drive them to the location at 432 Rock Road right there in Blowing Rock.

“The grounds will also be open for the attendees so they can stroll around and visit The Blowing Rock and visit our shops while the entertainers are setting up,” Sellers said.

Everyone in attendance is welcome to bring a cooler. However, there are no pets or umbrellas allowed and no refunds.

Tickets are still on sale; in advance, they are $40. During the week of Aug 7-12, they are $55 and for children 12 and under, they are $10.
