Oct. 22, 2014. On Saturday, Oct. 25, ghouls, goblins, super heroes, witches and more will flock to downtown Blowing Rock for the annual Blowing Rock Halloween Festival. Held each year on the last Saturday in October, this festival has become a fall staple and something that visitors and residents alike look forward to each year.

The festival will kick off at the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum, where attendees will enjoy “Haunted Yarns from Near and Far,” spooky tales told by Sherry Lovett from 1-1:50 p.m. Following the storytelling, kids in attendance can take part in “Creepy Crafts” from 2-3 p.m.

“Sherry Lovett tells a variety of stories including folktales, Native American tales, scary stories, and fairy tales, using precise language, eloquent movement, and dramatic voices to bring the stories to life,” read a press release.

Following the fun at the museum, families can head over to memorial park for air walks, and enjoy games and a fun house in the Recreation Center starting at 3 p.m. Hay rides through the town will take place from 4-8 p.m. starting from Memorial Park in the heart of the town.

The highlight of the festival, The Monster March, will start at 5:30 p.m. Participants should line up at the American Legion to parade through town at 5:45. After the march, stay in costume to trick-or-treat through downtown Blowing Rock starting at 6 p.m. To find participating locations simply look for the orange and black Halloween balloons. A costume contest will be held at 7 p.m., with sign up at 6:45 p.m. at the Recreation Center.

A moonlight scavenger hunt will be held at Broyhill Lake immediately following the costume contest. Participants can work in teams of up to three, and this activity is recommended for ages 6-13. Remember your flashlight!

Parking for the event will be available throughout the town.

“All of the public parking downtown will be available during the festival,” said Jennifer Gore, director of the Blowing Rock Parks and Recreation Department.

The entire festival runs from 2-9 p.m., is completely free and is fun for the whole family. Make it a night to remember at the Blowing Rock Halloween Festival. For more information about the festival, please call 828-295-5222.

After the conclusion of the festival, check out a spooky radio play just across the street!

Ensemble Stage will host a Frankenstein Radio Play at Blowing Rock School starting at 7 p.m. The story will come to life as it is presented in the style of a 1940s radio play with sound effects, Dr. Frankenstein and the creature himself! Tickets for the show are $14 for adults and $8 for students. For more information about the show or to purchase tickets, click here.
