Ticket sales have made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $3.6 billion for the state. Net proceeds will be used this year to help pay salaries of teachers and teacher assistants, for pre-kindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, for school construction and repair, and need-based college scholarships and financial aid.

Interest in Powerball jackpot generates $16.6 million for education

Feb. 16, 2015. In the ten weeks leading up to Wednesday’s Powerball drawing, ticket sales in North Carolina resulted in the state’s fourth jackpot winner in the game and an estimated $16.6 million earned for education.

There are nine ways a Powerball player might win a prize for $2 or $3 per play. But ticket sales always support education. And when a big jackpot leads to more interest in playing, it’s an even greater boost for the programs that benefit from lottery funding.

“This run was special for North Carolina – for our players, and education,” said Alice Garland, executive director of the lottery. “Our goal this year is to raise more than half a billion dollars for education, and the popularity of Powerball and other games will help the lottery do that.”

Funds earned this year will help pay salaries of teachers and teacher assistants, for pre-kindergarten programs for at-risk four-year-olds, school construction and repair, and need-based college scholarships and financial aid.
