The first USASA-sanctioned series in nearly 15 years in the High Country starts this weekend at Beech Mountain Resort – and the conditions are prime for skiing and snowboarding.

Registration for the USASA Southeastern Series slopestyle event on Saturday, Jan. 7 takes place at the View Haus from 8 to 10 a.m. A course inspection follows, and riders meet for the noon event at the top of the Terrain Park at 11:30 a.m.

Pre-registration is available online at southeasternseries.com.

Open to snowboarders and skiers, the event fee is $35, and Beech Mountain Resort, which is doing a complete build for the Southeastern series on Friday, the day before the competition, is offering a discount lift ticket for participants.

“Beech has done an amazing job getting ready for the event. The set up is going to be sick!” said Southeastern Series Director Andy McDaniel.

USASA (United States of America Snowboard and Freeski Association) is a national organization with 32 regional series across the U.S.; 500-plus events; and more than 6,000 members.

USASA is a main-feeder program to the U.S. Olympics with all of the current members of the U.S. Olympic snowboarding team and 75 percent of the U.S. Freeskiing team coming up through a USASA series.

USASA features divisions for all ages from kids 7 and younger to folks 60 and older.

Competitors can earn points toward an invitation for nationals in Colorado. Participants will have a chance to win a Never Summer “Warlock” snowboard.
