On the heels of another successful spring production that wooed and won its audiences with “The Last Round Up of the Guacamole Queens,” Beanstalk Community Theatre is at it again and bringing to the local stage yet another incredible weekend of performances later this month.

Another of our all-time favorite story lines, “The Addams Family: A New Musical Comedy,” will be presented July 26-28 in the Ross Auditorium at Watauga High School by the Boone-based theatre group, and promises to be one more success in a long line of the troupe’s great accomplishments.

According to Amy Beane, Beanstalk’s creative director, The Addams Family features an original story — and it’s every father’s nightmare.

Wednesday Addams has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family who her parents have never met. She confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez must keep a secret from his wife, Morticia — something he’s never done before. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.

Whether directing and producing the popular one-act weekends, or the hilarious productions for which the theatre has become known, Beanstalk Theatre offers a diverse range of programs to meet the interests of the residents in Watauga County and surrounding areas — whether behind the scenes, on the stage or in the audience.

Thanks to the combined talent and foresight of Amy Beane and Andrea McDonough, local theatre was given a breath of fresh air when the duo teamed up in 2009 to direct “Twinderella” for Blue Ridge Community Theatre, followed by “Willy Wonka” in 2010 and “A Peter Rabbit Tale” in 2011.

In 2012, BeanStalk Little Theatre was born. The first production was “Jingle Jury” in December followed by a successful “Night at the Wax Museum” in July 2013. Realizing the need to expand the theatre, BSLT was transformed into BeanStalk Community Theatre.

Today, it is a volunteer non-profit organization run by McDonough, executive director, who sits on the board (of directors) with president, Megan Ellis, and Beane, as creative director.

Ellis and fellow board member, Adam Newmark, are co-producers of the upcoming show.

Beane is a former theatre arts teacher and taught theatre arts in the public school system for 10 years before moving back to Boone. Andrea is a small business owner and leader in the Boone community.

“We take pride in offering the best in entertainment at an affordable price. We are dedicated to serving the needs of our community with each production,” said McDonough.

Additional upcoming Beanstalk productions for the 2018-19 season include: Student Directed One Acts, Almost Maine, Doublewide, Texas and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

“Thanks to a generous donation and grant, this summer production is partially funded with support from Kathy Schlagel and the Celia Lipton Farris and Victor W. Farris Foundation Home Community Fund, a component of the North Carolina Community Foundation. nccommunityfoundation.org.”

Other sponsors for this event include: Cole’s Lawncare, Andrea McDonough State Farm, A Cleaner World, Dan’l Boone Inn, mPrints, Sassy Cat Bakery and Ray’s Weather.

Dates and times for The Addams Family performance in Boone include a 7 p.m. show on July 26 and 27, with a 2 p.m. matinee on July 28.
