March 5, 2014. Banner Elk Tourism Development Authority Chair Steve Chandler passed away while undergoing major heart surgery Tuesday at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, according to Ron Johnson, publisher of the online Banner Elk Magazine, which currently features a condolence page for Chandler.
Chandler had been the TDA chairman for the previous three years and operated Clemmons Produce & Mountain Crafts off of Tynecastle Highway with his wife Rebecca for nearly the past nine years.
Considered a public servant and caring person by all that knew him, Chandler will surely be missed in the High Country.
“He was one of the most kindest, remarkable men in the community. He was always humble and always served the community [through various] boards to make a difference,” Sue Freeman, the director of Avery County Chamber of Commerce, said on Wednesday. “His heart was for Avery County, Banner Elk especially.”
