Banner Elk Church Project Brings Easter to Life

By Ben Wofford

April 8, 2012. Mount Calvary Baptist Church created a full replica of Jesus’ tomb three years ago, for Easter and beyond.

The pastor, George Wright, said the design and construction came from members of the congregation in cooperation with the town of Banner Elk.

“With our name being Mount Calvary we felt like [the tomb] would be a great opportunity to give a witness to the essence of our faith,” Wright said.

The tomb took three months to construct and is a permanent installation. It required building permits from the town of Banner Elk.

The tomb features local rocks, has a reinforced steel roof and native flowers make up it’s roof.

The interior features a table where guests can reflect and leave prayer requests.

“Almost every week we’ll have prayer requests from people who are just driving by,” Wright said. “We pray for those requests every week very specifically.”

Wright said there have been visitors from as far as Morganton and Hickory.

“We encourage people to come by. It’s a nice, quiet place to contemplate the meaning of the cross and the meaning of the resurrection,” Wright said.

The Mount Calvary Baptist Church is located at 1161 Hwy 194, Banner Elk. For more information, call (828) 898-4735 or visit mcbc-bannerelk.org.
