Baird’s Creek Presbyterian Church’s “Summerful of Music” Begins on June 17

Sarah and Mark McGuire

Vintage Valle Music returns to Baird’s Creek Presbyterian Church for a 7th big summer of community music! Come join us in the summer months of June, July, and August, on the 3rd Sunday of each month, from 4 – 6 p.m. Admission is free.

June 17: We begin this year on June 17th, 2018, with the multi-talented Sarah and Mark McGuire. Vocalist Sarah McGuire writes much of her own material and selects her music from a wide range of musical genres.  Accompanied by her father, Mark McGuire, a Sarah McGuire performance is always a delightful surprise! Back by popular demand will be storyteller ReVonda Crow, followed by our Western Watauga neighbor, versatile musician Lauren Johnson and her equally talented family. The busy afternoon closes with The Threshold Singers, who graciously share their joyful choral music with our community

July 15: July’s program is a triple whammy, opening with the exciting classic bluegrass music of The Dollar Brothers! There’s no better way to share the gift of music with our neighbors than a healthy helping of bluegrass and gospel favorites joyfully offered up by Watauga County’s favorite sons! Gracing our gathering again this year are The Burnett Sisters. These talented shooting stars are wowing audiences, winning awards and accolades near and far with their traditional string music and beautiful harmonies. We close the July show with the soul-touching, toe-tapping, rafter-rattling music of The Junaluska Gospel Choir, a Boone institution of sophisticated singing talent in the black gospel tradition. The choir is led by Danny Whittington and accompanied by some of the area’s best rhythm and blues musicians.

August 20: Local favorites Folk & Dagger join us for our final show, offering our community an opportunity to enjoy their mix of nostalgic folk and popular culture songs, hidden gems they’ve discovered, and beautiful originals penned by Doris Bazzini. New this year, Kay and Patrick Crouch, from Caldwell County, will share their popular act dedicated to traditional American music born in these mountains, a blend of old and new, bluegrass and Celtic, country and jazz. And, what says a summer afternoon more than The Moravian Brass Band? Led by Michael Salley, this band brings us familiar and traditional instrumentals mixed with a touch of classical, reminiscent of days gone by.

Come as you are, stay all afternoon or just sit a spell and enjoy the gift of music our neighbors bring to the “back porch” of Baird’s Creek. Music is an eclectic mix of bluegrass, folk, gospel, country, patriotic, pop, jazz, old-time and new, familiar and original – whatever our artists feel led to share. Come and join us. There’ll be no preaching, nor passing the hat, just goodtime entertainment and neighborly visits.

Entertainment is from 4 to 6 p.m. Held indoors, concerts are informal. Admission is FREE! Each month we feature a local need with suggestions of items to add to that month’s drive. In June, we are collecting healthy snacks for the W.A.M.Y. Mountain Adventures Day Camp. If you’d like to contribute, bring individually packaged, healthy snacks, such as fruit snacks, crackers, goldfish, teddy grahams, chips, and fruit cups.

Baird’s Creek Presbyterian Church is located at 2147 N.C. Hwy 194 S, Vilas NC 28692, just 2 miles north of The Original Mast General Store, in Valle Crucis.
