Valerie Morgan (Aug. 14, 1962 - Sept. 5, 2015)
Mrs. Valerie Morgan, 53, of Liberty Hill Road, Vilas, passed away Saturday afternoon, September 5, 2015, at her residence.
Valerie was a loving wife, daughter and sister. She was a Realtor for twenty-five years in Raleigh and the High Country. She was a lover of animals and a faithful supporter of Alaskan Malamute Rescue. She was a person of strong faith.
Valerie is survived by her husband, William F. “Bill” Morgan of the home, and other family members and friends.
A Celebration of Life for Valerie Morgan will be held Saturday, September 12, 2015 at 11:00 o’clock at The Church of the Holy Cross. Officiating will be Reverend Allan McCaslin.

Peggy Ann Townsend (Nov. 23, 1964 - Sept. 3, 2015)
Peggy Ann Townsend, 50, of Cynthia Lane, Banner Elk, passed away Thursday morning, September 3, 2015, at her home.
Peggy was born November 30, 1964 in Avery County, North Carolina, a daughter of Floyd Ray Townsend and Edna Earl Rupard Townsend.
Peggy is survived by her parents, Floyd and Edna Townsend, of Banner Elk; two sisters, Jane Eggers and husband Eddie of Banner Elk and Tina Johnson and husband Adam of Sugar Grove; one brother, Dennis Townsend of Banner Elk; two nephews, Mark Eggers and wife Tami of Banner Elk and Logan Johnson of Sugar Grove; two nieces, Roxanne Franklin and husband John of Banner Elk and Nichole Johnson of Sugar Grove; two great-nephews, Chris Eggers of Wake Forest and Josh Franklin of Banner Elk; two great-nieces, Taylor Eggers of Banner Elk and Hayley Franklin of Boone; and a very special great-great-nephew, Owen Franklin of Boone.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Ray Lewis Townsend and one sister, Nancy Emaline Townsend.
Funeral services for Peggy Ann Townsend will be conducted Sunday afternoon, September 6, 2015 at 2:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Reverend Ken Hodges, and Reverend Bill Shoupe. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 12:30 until 2:00. Burial will follow in the Townsend Family Cemetery.

Mrs. Mamie B. Craig (March 22, 1942 – Sept. 2, 2015)
Mrs. Mamie Lee Bentley Craig, 73, of Shulls Mills Road, Boone, passed away Wednesday afternoon, September 2, 2015 at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born March 22, 1942 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Florence Hollars Bentley. Mrs. Craig retried from Watauga County Schools where she worked in the Cafeteria. She was a member of Sandy Flats Missionary Baptist Church. Mamie enjoyed gardening and canning, but her favorite pastime was watching her grandchildren play volleyball.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Charles F. Craig, two daughters, Tammy Glenn of Tabor City and Sharon VanDyke and husband William of Blowing Rock, two granddaughters, Ashlyn and Jasmine VanDyke, one brother, Lloyd Bentley and wife Shirley of Boone, one sister in law, Audrey Bentley of Blowing Rock, and two nephews, Greg and Rodney Bentley. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Florence Bentley, and one brother, Donald Bentley.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mamie Craig will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 oclock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state at the chapel from 2 until 3 oclock. Officiating will be Rev. Burl Jones, Rev. Max West and Rev. Jackson Lawley. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock. Dale Franklin Caudill (June 21, 1947 - Sept. 2, 2015)
Mr. Dale Franklin Caudill, 68, of River Ridge Road, Boone, passed away peacefully at this home, Wednesday evening, September 2, 2015, after a courageous battle against cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.
Dale was born June 21, 1947 in Alleghany County, North Carolina, a son of the late Clay Franklin Caudill and Pearl Upchurch Caudill. He was a 1972 graduate of the College of Albemarle, and was a U.S. Marine Veteran, having served two tours in Vietnam. He was retired from Ladd Furniture, and was a Christmas tree grower.
He married Nancy Hart, the love of his life on November 24, 1973. They built a beautiful life together for forty-two years, raising two children, Jennifer and Allison and were proud grandparents of three beautiful girls, Annaleigh, Clara, and Caroline. He was a proud Christmas tree farmer and an active member of Bethelview United Methodist Church. He was very active in his church teaching Sunday School, serving the shut in, organizing mission trips and singing in the men’s choral group, Mountain Thunder. He was tough as nails with a heart of gold.
Dale is survived by his wife, Nancy Hart, of the home; two daughters, Jennifer Perez and husband Joseph, and Allison Grant and husband Michael, all of Charlotte; three granddaughters, Annaleigh and Clara Grant, and Caroline Perez, all of Charlotte; three brothers, Jerry Caudill of Bedford, Virginia, Phillip Caudill of Coinjock, North Carolina, and Timothy Caudill and wife Tina of Nags Head, North Carolina; mother-in-law, Dorcas Wagoner of Sparta; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Crouse and husband Dennis of Ennice, North Carolina and Peggy Denny and husband Clay, of Hendersonville, North Carolina. He is also survived by ten nieces and nephews.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Clay and Pearl Caudill, and a sister, Janet McCaskill.
A Memorial Service for Mr. Dale Franklin Caudill will be conducted Saturday afternoon, September 5, 2015, at 3:30 PM at Bethelview United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Reverend Tom Miller and Reverend Elaine Hall. Military Honors will be provided by the United States Marines, American Legion Post 130, Veterans of Foreign War Post 7034 of Sparta and the Disabled Americans Veterans Chapter 90.

Kathleen Rose Barrier (April 4, 1928 – Sept. 2, 2015)
Kathleen Rose Barrier, age 87, of Newland passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at Charles A. Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville.
She was born April 4, 1928 in Avery County a daughter of the late Clate Carl and Ora Singleton Rose.
Kathleen was a member of Jonas Ridge Methodist Church and the Ladies Auxillary of the Jonas Ridge Fire Department.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking and baking and was well known for her homemade mints.
Along with her parents, Kathleen was preceded in death by her: husband, Clyde Barrier; son, Randall Barrier, Sr.; sisters, Mae Brown, Doris (Melba) McDaniel.

Martha Belle Canter Moretz (Aug. 12, 1920 - Sept. 1, 2015)
Mrs. Martha Belle Canter Moretz, 95, of the Meat Camp Community, Boone, passed away peacefully at her home, Tuesday morning, September 1, 2015.
Mrs. Moretz was born August 12, 1920. She was the daughter of the late Robert Miller and Alice Johnson Miller. She was retired from the Houskeeping Department of ASU, and was a founding member of the Blue Ridge Mountain Church in Elk Park. She loved the Lord and was a great Christian example to all who knew her.
Mrs. Moretz is survived by six daughters, Jean Dollar and husband David of Boone, Reba Curtis and husband Bob of Matney, Phyllis Trivette and husband Grayson of Boone, Lucille Honeycutt of Todd, Laura Norris and husband Jerry of Boone, and Sharon McCurry of Sugar Grove; two sons, Robert Canter, and Earl Canter and wife Judy, all of Todd; one daughter-in-law, Gail Canter of Todd; thirty-five grandchildren, sixty-seven great-grandchildren and twenty-one great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband and father of her children, Wade Dellet Canter; her second husband, Lester Moretz; a daughter, Genevive Eller; three sons, Arlie, Kenneth and Raymond Canter; sisters, Vergie Lentz, Pearl Trivette, Maude Miller, Louise Holman and Ruby Underwood; brothers, Ferd, Vestal, Frank and Bruce Miller; daughter-in-law, Louise Canter; son-in-laws, Dwayne Eller, Eugene Honeycutt and John Hicks; grandchildren, Donna and Randy Hicks; and great-grandson, Ezekial Dollar.
Funeral services for Martha Belle Canter Moretz will be conducted Friday afternoon, September 4, 2015, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00. Officiating will be Pastor Freddie Stapleton, Pastor Don Stines, Pastor Bruce Miller and Pastor Danny Honeycutt. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

Emma Jean Pritchard Ledford (Dec. 31, 1946 – Aug. 31, 2015)
Emma Jean Pritchard Ledford of Newland went peacefully to be with her Lord after a decline in health on Monday, August 31, 2015 in the comfort of her own home surrounded by family.
Emma Jean was born December 31, 1946. Emma Jean served as a home caretaker to many people with High Country In Home Care for several years. She enjoyed spending time with her family, animals and caring for people. She was a lover of nature and specifically butterflies.
She was the youngest child of a family of 14 children by Theodore and Lorrena Pritchard of Newland, NC.
She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years Jack “Toby” Ledford, her children Randy and Becky Ledford of Newland and Katina and Ronnie Street of Roan Mountain, TN; along with grandchildren: Johnny Montgomery of Utah, Kevin Ledford of Newland, Katelynn Wagner of Asheville, McKenzie Ledford of Newland and Logan Street of Roan Mountain, TN and one great granddaughter Vera Wagner of Asheville. She is also survived by mother-in-law Rona Ledford of Newland, 3 sisters: Virgie Smith of Morganton, Bessie Huffman of Morganton and Margaret Clark of Lenior, NC, along with several nieces, great nieces, nephews and great nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents Theodore and Lorrena Pritchard of Newland, siblings: James Pritchard of Newland, Vernie Smith of Morganton, Sadie Fairchild of Maryland, Ruby Manning of Williamston, NC, Simon Lewis Pritchard of Morganton, Mary Louise Whitman of Morganton, Minnie Norville of Rutherfordton, Irene Whitman of Morganton, Katie Sue Johnson of Morganton and Jesse Pritchard Jr. of Morganton.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at 7:00 pm at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Newland, NC. Pastor John McCoury and Pastor Wayne Buchanan will be officiating the service. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until the service hour, Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Family, friends, and pallbearers will gather at the funeral home on Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. to go in procession to the Daniels Cemetery for the graveside services.
