James Morris Fletcher (July 8, 1918 – Oct. 25, 2015)

James Morris Fletcher, 97, of Sherwood Road, Vilas, passed away Sunday, October 25, 2015 in Kingsport, Tennessee. Born July 8, 1918 in Watauga County, James was a son of William and Myrtle Mast Fletcher. Mr. Fletcher was of the Baptist faith. James worked as a tobacco farmer in Vilas and as a coal miner in Pennsylvania and enjoyed collecting and trading antiques.

Mr. Fletcher is survived by his wife, Lula Belle Fletcher of Mountain City; children, Bill Fletcher of Kingsport, TN., Janice Pasch, Betty Jo Lee and James Donley Fletcher and wife, Brenda, all of Vilas; step-children, Melissa Garban of Butler, Sueann Meade of Boone and Pamela Meade of Mountain City; and brother, Jake Fletcher and wife Hilda, of Hudson. Numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, October 29, at 2 oclock, at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Shelby Stevens. The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon from noon until 2 oclock, prior to services, at Austin & Barnes. Graveside services and burial will follow at Cove Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Jordan Howell Hallmark (May 13, 1987

Jordan Howell Hallmark, 28, of 155 Rankin Road, Blowing Rock, passed away Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015, at Johnson City Medical Center.

Jordan is survived by his father and mother, Alex and Jo Ann Howell Hallmark of Blowing Rock, and two brothers, Hunter Hallmark of Boone, and Spenser Hallmark of Brooklyn, New York.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Grover and Carrie Howell, and his paternal grandparents, Gene and Sara Hallmark.

Memorial services for Jordan Howell Hallmark will be conducted Thursday afternoon, October 29, 2015, at 3:00 o’clock, at St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church in Blowing Rock. Officiating will be Father Rick Lawler.

The family will receive friends, at a reception, following the memorial service.

Jayne McNeil (Jan. 6, 1935 – Oct. 24, 2015)

Jayne McNeil, age 80, of Newland passed away on October 24, 2015 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

She was born January 6, 1935 in Philadelphia, MS. a daughter of the late Louis Madison and Beatrice Stewart King.

Jayne was very involved with the community. She was Founder and Director of Volunteer Avery and served on the Board of Directors of RAM, Operation Pocket Change with Mountain Electric, Ombudsman with Life Care Center, Board of Directors with Avery County Department of Social Services, delivered Meals on Wheel, was a member of the Daughters of the Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and charter board member and former chair of the Avery County Fair.

She was a member of Newland Methodist Church.

Along with her parents, Jayne was preceded in death by her brother Sonny King.

Jayne has left to cherish her memory her: husband of 60 years, Samuel McNeil of the home; daughter, Mary Carol McNeil Clark and husband Richard of Charlotte, NC; granddaughter, Mary Madison Clark Winbourne and husband Jordan of Wilson, NC; grandson, Anderson Robert Clark of Charlotte, NC.

Funeral services for Jayne McNeil will be conducted on Sunday, November 1st at 11:00 a.m. at the Newland United Methodist Church.

Reece Clark (June 14, 1927 – Oct. 24, 2015)

Reece Clark, age 88, of Newland passed away on October 24, 2015 at Cannon Memorial Hospital.

A native of Avery County, he was born June 14, 1927 a son of the late Joseph Wesley and Fannie Rose Clark.

He was an avid fisherman with a passion for gardening and loved his grandchildren.

Along with his parents, Reece was preceded in death by his: wife Cora Lee Daniels Clark; daughter, Linda Kay Francum; 4 sisters; 10 brothers.

Reece has left to cherish his memory his: sons, David Gerald Clark and wife Kay of Hickory, Randall Lee Clark and wife Anita of Newland; daughter, Donna Kay “Robin” Deitz and husband Jeffrey of Maiden; 8 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren.

The Clark family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 27th from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. Funeral services for Reece Clark will be conducted on Wednesday, October 28th 2:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with interment services to follow in the Calloway Cemetery.

Mrs. Maye H. Wheatley (Nov. 12, 1926 – Oct. 24, 2015)

Mrs. Maye Hubble Wheatley, age 88, of Bamboo Road, Boone, passed away Saturday morning, October 24, 2015. Mrs. Wheatley was born November 12, 1926 in Russell County Virginia. She was retired from the Scott County School Board where she worked as the Clerk for over 30 years in Gate City, Virginia. Maye enjoyed cooking, sewing and working in her flowers. She was a member of the Eastern Star and Nickelsville Methodist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Vicki Miller of Vilas, one granddaughter, Cindy L. Clark of Kingsport, Tennessee, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Earnest E. Hubble and Mattie Purcell Hubble, her husband Ezra Wheatley, and several brothers and sisters.

Memorial services for Mrs. Maye Wheatley will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 oclock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Delmar James. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 oclock until 2 oclock at the funeral home. Sweet Velma Sadie (Ford) Boyce, 92, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015, at her home in Boone, NC.

Born at home during a blizzard in Western New York in 1923, she was the daughter of Walter Roy Ford and Lillian Belle (Scharping) Ford.

Velma loved to travel, crochet and laugh, especially with her grandchildren.

A military wife for 30 years, she is survived by her husband of 71 years, Harris S. Boyce; sons Wayne and Steve and daughter Pam; 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.

Visitation will be held Monday morning, Oct. 26, at 10:00 a.m. at Elmore Cannon Stephens Funeral Home in Sumter, SC followed by a graveside service at Evergreen Cemetery (Sumter, SC).
