Minnie Wilcox Davis (Sept. 4, 1922 – May 25, 2015) 

Mrs. Minnie Sarah Wilcox Davis, 92, of Sally Street, Boone, passed away Monday, May 25, 2015 at Watauga Medical Center.

Mrs. Wilcox was born Sept. 4, 1922 in Ashe County, a daughter of the late Claude Wilcox and Maggie Phillips Wilcox. She was a retired housekeeper from Appalachian State University, and attended Cool Springs Baptist Church.

Mrs. Wilcox is survived by one son, Brent Davis of Boone; one daughter, Joyce Gates and husband Eugene of Boone; five granddaughters, Lynn Isaacs of Boone, Sandy Tenley of Rockville, Md., Kim Gates of Boone, Pamela James of West Jefferson and Tracy Stephens of Atlanta; one brother, O’dell Wilcox of Gastonia; and two sisters, Juanita Holman of Lenior and Geneva Ashley of Myrtle Beach. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Houck Davis, a daughter, Judy Bumgarner, six sisters, Winnie Scott, Ellie Pilkenton, Ruby Lee, Cora Winebarger, Blanche and Hattie Wilcox, and two brothers, Clifford and Bennie Wilcox.

Funeral services for Minnie Sarah Wilcox Davis will be conducted Saturday afternoon, May 30, 2015, at 2:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Burl Greer. Graveside services and entombment will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00, prior to the service, at Hampton Funeral Service.

Vernon Eugene Osborne (May 26, 1941 – May 25, 2015) 

Mr. Vernon Eugene Osborne, 73, of Snowy Oak Road, Boone, passed away Monday, May 25, 2015, after a long battle with cancer.

Vernon was born May 26, 1941, in Ashe County, a son Eula Russ Osborne and the late Talmadge Vernon Osborne. Vernon was a devoted and loving husband and father. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, taking care of his mother, and volunteering at the Riverview Community Center. Vernon was a devout optimist and countryman. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga from 1961 to 1967. He was an electronics engineer and computer consultant.

Vernon is survived by his wife, Sharon Osborne of the home; three daughters, Lisa Thorpe and husband Shawn of Wilkesboro, Amanda Riordan Whitman, and Maria Osborne of Kissimmee, Fla.; two sons, Jeffrey Osborne of Kissimme, Fla. and Michael Osborne of Dayton, Ohio; his mother, Eula Russ Osborne of Creston; one brother, James “Jim” Osborne of Creston; two sisters, Jane Parker of Creston, and Susan Stanley; nine grandsons, Richard Osborne and wife Lydia of West Jefferson, Christopher Eggers of Boone, Mark Caudill of Cullowhee, Nicholas Johnson and Michael Osborne, Jr. of Boone, Jason Luttrell and Jonathan Moulier, Daniel Wear and Andrew Wear, all of Kissimmee, Fla.; seven granddaughters, Amanda Caudill of Wilkesboro, Brittany Tensi, Jade Tensi, Heather Watson and Miranda Osborne, all of Boone, and Carly Moulier and Hannah Wear of Kissimmee, Florida. He is also survived by 9 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ronald, Jerry and Tommy and one sister, Martha.

Memorial services for Vernon Eugene Osborne will be conducted Sunday afternoon, May 31, 2015 at 2:00 o’clock at the Riverview Community Center. Officiating will be Reverend Gordon Noble.

Mrs. Judy Combs, 69, of Council Ward Road, Sugar Grove, passed away Saturday evening, May 23, 2015, at Wake Forest University Medical Center in Winston Salem.

Judy was born Sept. 10, 1945 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Andy Patterson Mast and Collie Mahala Mast Greer. She was a homemaker, and a member of Green Valley Baptist Church.

Judy is survived by her husband of 54 years, Willie Combs of the home; four daughters, Ginger Hale and husband Terry of Zionville, Julie Reary and husband Tony of Cove Creek, Karen Combs of Sugar Grove and Michelle Combs of Boone; one son, Willie Keith Combs and wife Dina of Sugar Grove; six granddaughters, Jessi Studstrup and husband Kristian of Sugar Grove, Heather Michelle Greer of Granite Falls, Deanna Reary of Cove Creek, Emily Hale of Zionville, Maria Combs of Sugar Grove and Savannah Harmon of Sugar Grove; one grandson, Mason Combs of Sugar Grove; one great-granddaughter, Bailee Studstrup of Sugar Grove; two sisters and three brothers. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her adopted parents, Will and Myrtle Fletcher, one sister and two brothers.

Funeral services for Judy Combs will be conducted Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at 3:00 o’clock at Green Valley Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:30 until 3:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Eric Cornett and Reverend Derick Wilson. Burial will follow in the Green Valley Baptist Church Cemetery.

Anna Mae Turbyfill, 86, of Newland passed away on May 22, 2015 at the Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville.

A native of Avery County, she was born June 12, 1928 a daughter of the late Harrison and Rosa Etta Brown Ollis.

Along with her parents, Anna Mae was preceded in death by her: husband, Rev. Raymon Turbyfill; son, James Harrison Turbyfill; sisters, Roberta Smith, Unave Isaacs; brothers, Devoe Ollis, Ken Ollis.

Anna Mae has left to cherish her memory her: children, Jerry and Doris Turbyfill of Newland, Kenny and Rebecca Turbyfill of Charlotte, Samuel and LisaTurbyfill of Crossnore, Terry Turbyfill of Cranberry, Ricky Turbyfill of Shallotte; daughter in law, Eunis Turbyfill of Goldsboro; sister, Sylvia Bare of Elk Park; brother, Billy Ollis of Cranberry; dearest friends, Kim Ruppard, Johnny Cash, Della Mae Turbyfill; sixteen grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; a host of other family members and friends.

Funeral services for Anna Mae Turbyfill will be conducted on Thursday, May 28, 2015 at 8 p.m. from the Grandfather Chapel of the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. David Burnop officiating. Mrs. Reba B. Brooks (Oct. 14, 1924 – May 22, 2015)

Mrs. Reba Bingham Brooks, 90, of Linville Creek Road, Vilas, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, May 22, 2015.

She was born Oct. 14, 1924 in Elizabethton, Tenn. to William Harvey Bingham and Bessie Hayes Bingham. She was employed at Brooks Plumbing & Heating, Inc. for over 30 years which was founded by her husband in 1947.

Mrs. Brooks was a member of Brushy Fork Baptist Church. She was a very active church member and truly loved her church. She was a choir member, but her greatest joy was helping with Vacation Bible Schools. She provided refreshments and hauled numerous children to Bible School to make sure that they had the opportunity to hear the gospel of Christ. She led several people to the Lord. She served as the president of the Brushy Fork WMU (Women’s Missionary Union) which has since been named the Reba Circle in honor of her many years of service and commitment. She was also a long-time member of the Brushy Fork Extension Club.

She was renowned in the community for her delicious cooking. She took meals whenever there were deaths or sickness in the community. She looked forward to feeding her family an enormous meal every Sunday night when they gathered for memorable family time.

She is survived by her son Larry Brooks and wife, Melanie, of Vilas; two grandsons, Jason Brooks and wife, Laura, and Justin Brooks and wife, Marta; and four great-grandchildren, Olivia, Ashley, Nolan and Kara Brooks, all of Vilas.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Hiram Brooks, Jr.; and five brothers, Joe, Horace, Bill, George and Sherman Bingham.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to her caregivers. They have been so loving and compassionate during her extended illness.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, May 25, 2015, at 12 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Herbert Parunak and Rev. Shane Golds. The family will receive friends from 11 until 12 o’clock, prior to services at Austin and Barnes. Burial service will be private.

Agnes Morton Woodruff, 90, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2015 at her home in Linville, North Carolina.

Aggie was a native of Wilmington, North Carolina, the daughter of Julian Walker Morton and Agnes MacRae Morton.

From an early age, Aggie was an avid sportswoman, excelling particularly at her favorite pastime, the game of golf. She went on to win the Women’s Carolinas Golf Championship four times, as well as numerous club championships. Aggie was also a real estate developer in Wilmington and active in the communities in which she resided. Her love of golf inspired her to found Grandfather Golf and Country Club in Linville. Grandfather has been recognized as one of the top golf courses in North Carolina and the United States. Her love of family, community and tradition has served as a model for the Club. She was an amazing woman, strong, loving, creative and giving.

Aggie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Frank Woodruff, her brothers, Hugh, Tommy and Julian, and her son, Julian Morton Cocke.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Greene and husband, Jay, and son, Bill Cocke and wife, Bonnie, and by step-children, Harry Mayer, Barbara Butler, and Kennedy Woodruff, and by grandchildren, Scottie Hazelgrove, Julian Benfield, John Benfield, Will Cocke, Elizabeth Fingar, Robert Cocke and Catherine MacKay, and by eight great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.

The family plans a grave side service at Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington. A private memorial service will be held at a later date in Linville.

Marjory Cooper Unrath (Nov. 8, 1934 – May 20, 2015)

Marjory Cooper Unrath, 80, of Sugar Mountain, NC, passed away May 20, 2015 at her residence.

A native of Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Clyde Cooper and Mildred Stroupe Cooper.

Mrs. Unrath retired from the Avery County School System after a long career. She will always be remembered for kind and pleasant demeanor and her sincere attitude and smile. She loved her students and fellow educators.

She is survived by a sister, Connie Johnson of Patterson, and a step daughter, Sandra Justus of Clyde.

James Dalton Reese (Oct. 25, 1997 – May 21, 2015)

James Dalton Reese, 17, of Newland went to be with The Lord on May 21, 2015.

He was born October 25, 1997 in Avery County the son of Darrell W. Reese of Thomson, Ga. and Kimberly Danyale Greene Reese of Linville.

Dalton attended Fellowship Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing, hunting, riding dirt roads and playing guitar.

He was preceded in death by his: paternal grandfather, Charles W. Reese; maternal grandfather, Glendon James Greene; maternal great grandparents, Jack English, Oscar and Evelyn Greene.

Along with his parents, Dalton has left to cherish his memory: his sister, Paige LouAnn Reese of Linville; paternal grandparents, Ronnie and Lou Vena Hixinbaugh of Warren, GA.; maternal grandmother, Patricia English Greene Byrd and husband Donnie Byrd of Selma, NC.; maternal great grandmother, Margaret English of Newland; aunt, Doris Benfield; cousin, Linda Benfield. Several aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and friends also survive.

Funeral services for James Dalton Reese will be conducted on Monday, May 25, 2015 at 8:00 pm at the Grandfather Chapel with Pastor James Ballew officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour. Interment will be Tuesday, May 26 11:00 a.m. in the Tanglewood Cemetery.

Barbara Sue “Boo” Moody, 46, of the Jonas Ridge Community passed away on May 20, 2015 at Burke Hospice and Palliative Care.

She was born Jan. 27, 1969 a daughter of James and Stella Barrier Gallion of Jonas Ridge.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Harold Moody.

A loving and kind woman who was greatly loved by her family and friends, Barbara has left to cherish her memory along with her parents her: sister, Judy Beck and husband Johnny of Morganton; brother, Jimmy John Gallion and wife Crystal of Jonas Ridge; sons, Darrell James Pyatte, Johnathan Lee Pyatte, Harley Matthew Pyatte; four nieces; four nephews; 16 great nieces and nephews.

He was born August 28, 1922 in Watauga County to Robert Leander and Lucy Norris, and was a member of Bethelview United Methodist Church. He was a World War II Veteran, stationed in Europe for most of his enlistment.

He was a builder by trade, worked as a mason, and owned and operated a sawmill. During his retirement years, he loved to listen to Bluegrass music and was always ready to get up and dance. Estle was known for the sticker cards he loved to make.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Lena Main Norris.

Surviving are three daughters, Lynda Brown and husband Gary and Caron L. Norris, all of Boone and Sheron Norris of Lenoir; Six grandchildren, Laura Crandall and husband, Rob, Lenore Jamison and husband, Dave, Lynette Hartley and husband, Eric, all of Boone, Leslie Lawrence and husband, Aaron of Sugar Grove, Bridgette Haas and husband, Harold of Lenoir and Shilohe Otto and husband, Justin of Boone; and twelve great-grandchildren, Lillie and Noah Jamison, Ethan and Eli Hartley, Grant, Gracie and Gabriella Lawrence, Autumn and Kaitlyn Haas, and Chase, Ryker and Camdyn Otto. Two sisters Betsy Stanbery , Unadel Ward and husband David, sister-in law, Bea Norris, all of Boone. Two sister-in-laws, Beulah Harvey and husband, Lee, of Siler City and Jessie Cassavaugh and husband, John of Lenoir. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his step­ mother, Nina Norris, three sisters, Jessie Padgett and husband, John, Maebelle Denny and husband, Edwin, and Roberta Norris. Two brothers, Coy Norris and wife Elsie and Raevon Norris, and one brother-in-law Harold Stanbery.

Funeral services for Mr. Estle Norris will be conducted Saturday afternoon, May 23, 2015 at 2:00 at Bethelview Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Bob Roten and Rev. Elaine Hall. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 prior to the service at Bethelview United Methodist Church.

Burial with military honors provided by American Legion Post 130 and DAV Chapter 90 will be in the Norris Tabernacle Cemetery. Nathaniel David Isley, passed away shortly after his birth on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at Watauga Medical Center.

Nathaniel was the infant son of Brittany Nicole Ragan and Dylan Isley of Boone; the grandson of Laura and Richard Isaacs of Zionville, David Daniel and Reta Ragan of Mountain City, Patricia and Ed Griswald of Boone, and Roy Isley and wife Lisa of Newland; and the great-grandson of Clay and Betty Woodring of Todd, Gail and Donny Redwine of Sugar Grove and Roy Clyde Isley, Sr. of Morganton. He is also survived by several aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents Fred and Louise Ragan and C.M. and Arlene Shore.

Funeral services for Nathaniel David Isley will be conducted Friday evening at 8:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 7:00 until 8:00. Officiating will be Preacher Jerry Lee Pennell.

Mary H. Billingsley (June 4, 1930 – May 19, 2015) 

Mary H. Billingsley, 84, of Pheasant Lane, Blowing Rock, passed away Tuesday evening, May 19, 2015, at her home.

Mrs. Billingsley was born June 4, 1930 in Truman Arkansas. Very Soon she moved to Amory, Mississippi to be near her paternal grandparents John Allison and Quillar Hamilton Hathcock. At the age of 12 her family moved to King Street, Charleston, South Carolina. She married a Citadel graduate and traveled all over the US and Europe with the Air Force. In 1974 she became a Real Estate Broker in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She continued this career even after moving to Blowing Rock, North Carolina in 1988.

She loved to play bridge and taught many lessons over her adult life. She also loved to sew, knit, read and play tennis, just ask her best bud Rodger Federer.

Mary is survived by two daughters, Lisa B. Watson of Hewitt, New Jersey and Leslie M. Billingsley of Blowing Rock; one son, Vincent H. Billingsley, II of Charleston, South Carolina, and one sister, Bonnie Dudley of Charleston, South Carolina. She is also survived by five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, A. Clifton Hathcock and Myrtle Brasfield Hathcock, a daughter, Susan Gem Billingsley, and one sister, Marie Coleman.

A memorial service will be conducted Saturday afternoon, May 30, 2015, at 5:00 o’clock, at St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church. Father Rick Lawler will officiate.

He was born October 5, 1944 a son of the late Ellis Edward and Alsabelle Screws Beattie.

Along with his parents, Lowell was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lou Beattie.

Harry Garland (April 22, 1930 – May 18, 2015)

Harry-Garland-1432137969Mr. Harry Garland, 85 of Biltmore Lake, passed away Monday, May 18, 2015 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 24 at 4 pm at Linville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roland Mullinix officiating. The family will receive friends from 3-4 pm prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Garland was a graduate of Lees McRae College and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He pursued postgraduate studies at Trinity University in Texas and continued his operatic training on a Fulbright Scholarship at the Rome Opera in Italy where he studied under Luigi Ricci, friend and colleague of most, if not all of the Italian verismo composers.

A baritone, Mr. Garland performed in opera and concerts throughout the US and Italy. When his singing career was cut short by serious illness, he turned to teaching at the age of 28 and found his life’s true calling.

Even as a classically trained singer, Mr. Garland always had a great love for the music of the American Musical Theater. In the 1960’s he began work with students who wished to make the transition between classical and musical theater without sacrificing voice and technique in either field.

The following singers are but a partial list of the performers who studied under Mr. Garland: Metropolitan Opera singers William Walker, Dina Formichini, and Mario Sereni; pop singer Bon Jovi; film and recording star Bette Midler; Tony award winner Faith Prince whose Broadway credits include Guys and Dolls and the King and I; Broadway leading lady Rebecca Luker who has sung leads in the Phantom of the Opera Secret Garden and Showboat and is currently singing Maria in the Broadway revival of the Sound of Music; Michael Hayden who starred in the Lincoln Center production of Carousel; Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham who recently made his Broadway debut in Triumph of Love; Joyce Castle Metropolitan and international opera and concert singer; and Angelina Reaux concert and opera singer and acclaimed Kurt Weill interpreter.

Mr. Garland was preceded in death by his mother Abby Garland, father Robert Garland, and a brother Ralph Garland.

He is survived by his sister-in-law Marian Garland Floyd and her husband Dave, two nephews Bob Garland and his wife Carolyn and nephew Scott Garland, a niece Linda King, two grand nieces Tamera Garland and Shannon Garland and her son Dalton, one grand nephew Shane Garland and his wife Karen and son Noah.

Pan Miller Davis (June 26, 1949 – May 17, 2015) 

Pan Miller Davis, 65, of Sally Street, Boone, wife of Brent Davis, passed away Sunday afternoon, May 17, 2015, at Watauga Medical Center.

Pan was born June 26, 1949 in Germany, daughter of the late Dean and Pan Crews Miller. She was the office manager for Brent Davis Architecture and a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.

Pan is survived by her husband, Brent Davis of the home; one daughter, Tracy Stephens and husband David of Cumming, Ga.; three granddaughters, Grace Stephens, Emma Stephens, and Sophie Stephens, all of Cumming; one brother, Courtney Miller and wife Lexy of Boynton Beach, Florida; her mother-in-law, Minnie Davis of Boone, and one sister-in-law, Joyce Gates and husband Gene of Boone. She is also survived by one niece and two nephews.

A Celebration of the Life of Pan Miller Davis will be conducted Friday afternoon, May 22, 2015, at 2:00 o’clock, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. Officiating will be Freda Goodman and Reverend Burl Greer.
