Bernice Cuthbertson Carpenter (Aug. 10, 1924 – June 13, 2015)

Bernice Julia Cuthbertson Carpenter, age 90, of Newland, went dancing into heaven and into Jesus’ arms on Saturday, June 13, 2015.

Bernice-Carpenter-1434544597She was escorted into Heaven by the “love of her life” Robert Hazel Carpenter, and infant son, Daniel Ray Carpenter. Bernice was born August 10, 1924, to Clingman and Julie Daniels Cuthbertson. So, the receiving line in Heaven surely included: her parents and eight siblings, brothers: Warnie, Hoyle, Creed, Jack and Everett Cuthbertson; and sisters: Willie C. Edwards, Faye C. Ford, and Ethel C. Robbins. A great reunion surely took place with the Carpenter, Murray, and Hefner families, and included many family and friends as they all joined her dance.

Bernice graduated from Newland High School, in 1942, and attended Crossnore Business School, before she married Hazel and became a housewife. She dedicated her life to family and friends. She became a mentor to many young people in Avery County, due to her genuine relationship with Jesus Christ. She loved saints and sinners equally. Bernice was a master storyteller and knew the genealogy of Avery County, like few people do, right up until the time of her illness and death. Bernice and Hazel loved to travel, making nineteen trips “West”, always taking friends and family with them. For forty years, they enjoyed their “vacation house” in St. Augustine, Florida, welcoming not only the Avery County community there, but also the many family and friends who dropped in anytime they were in Florida.

Left to celebrate the memories of Bernice is her greatest legacy, family: children, Shufford Carpenter and wife, Pat, of Newland; Sharon “Buggs” Smith-Wise, and husband, John Wise, of Newland; and Betty “Sam” Carpenter, of Crossnore. Also remaining are her grandchildren and great grandchildren, who were the light of her life: Jackie Johnson, and daughter Madison; Mike and Dawn, and their children, Gus and Elijah Carpenter; Cale and Mindy Smith, and their children, Lane and Jordan Smith, and Cooper Kleinsmith; Jay and Kelly Smith, and their children, Katie Grace, Nolan, and Darla Sage Smith. Her Carpenter sisters, Geneva, Evelyn, and Vera, as well as her nieces and nephews also remain.

Bernice’s greatest attribute was her unpretentious hospitality and “come as you are” philosophy. Therefore, we will celebrate her life and transition to Heaven in the same way; with music, dancing, and storytelling. We invite all her family and friends to a time of fun, fellowship, and food from 2:00 until 6:00 pm on Saturday, June 20 at the Mountain Glen Clubhouse in Newland.

Words of comfort and memories may be shared with the family and viewed at www.rsfh.net.

She is also survived by two of her sisters, Alicia Kittess of Carson City, Nevada, and Ruth Panzirer of Pierre, South Dakota.

Her life was dedicated to the spiritual and physical nurturing of all those that were fortunate and blessed to know her. Emi was a devoted and faithful wife, loving and caring mother, and a dedicated and unfailing servant of her Lord Jesus Christ. Emi and her husband Dan accepted the Lord and committed their lives to serving Him shortly before their marriage in June of 1963.

Although life and career brought several moves, wherever she found herself, she connected with other believers through church and Bible studies and found ways to serve and minister to those in need in her community and beyond. Emi joyfully served the Lord teaching Sunday schools, hosting and leading small groups, ministering to homeless and poverty stricken people and working the last six years along with her husband as an Operation Christmas Child shoebox Area Coordinator for the High Country in North Carolina.

She was honored with the privilege of delivering thousands of the boxes to the children of Ukraine. Emi enjoyed gardening, cooking and entertaining guests, and she always found ways to share these gifts with others. While her life was cut short by cancer, her influence and love will impact for generations.

She was preceded in death by her father Edwin Richard Elko and mother Alice Genevieve Elko, and one sister, Irene Dose.

Funeral arrangements for Emi Jarvis are a family visitation and viewing, which will be held on Thursday, June 18 from 5-7 PM at Hampton’s Funeral Service in Boone, North Carolina and a memorial service will be conducted on Friday, June 19 at 2 PM at Alliance Bible Fellowship in Boone, North Carolina.
