Ms. Anita Powell Lowenberg, 62, of Fleetwood, died Monday, July 27, 2015.

Ms. Lowenberg is survived by one daughter, Lesley Michelle Deaton of Newland, one granddaughter, Jesse Leighann Pyatte of Newland, two great-grandsons, Landon Edward Keller, of Newland, and Nicholas Banner of Tennessee, her mother, Aileen Hughes Powell, of Newland, two sisters, Joyce Ann Dellinger and husband Michael of Newland, Rita D. Staton of Spruce Pine and three brothers, Larry Wayne Powell and wife Tammy of Morganton, Norris Nelson Powell of Newland and Bobby Greggory Powell and wife Heidi of Crossnore and her loving companion, Larry Comparoni of Fleetwood.

She was preceded in death by her father, Larry Matthew Powell and a half sister, Elizabeth Powell.

Frances Tatum (Sept. 13, 1926 – July 27, 2015)

Frances Tatum, 88, of Elk Park passed away on July 27, 2015 at Cranberry House.

She was born September 13, 1926 in Roan Mountain, Tenn., a daughter of the late Robert and Cordelia Radford Orr.

Frances was a member of Elk Park Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and lead the Methodist Youth Fellowship for many years.

She worked at Bemberg in Elizabethton, Tenn. during WWII, a Teachers Assistant at Elk Park Elementary School, retiring from TRW in Newland and enjoyed gardening flowers.

Along with her parents, Frances was preceded in death by her: husband, Charles Tatum; brother, Bill Orr.

A loving mother, a great friend and neighbor who loved her Lord, Frances has left to cherish her memory her: sons, Ronnie Tatum and wife Melissa of Granite Falls, Bob Tatum and wife Edwina of Minneapolis; sisters, Ruth Hunnicutt of Roan Mountain, TN., Jessie Street of Johnson City, TN.; brother, John Orr and wife Phyllis of Roan Mountain, TN.; grandchildren, Luke Tatum, Molly Tatum Nelson, Clark Tatum, Will Tatum; six great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Frances Tatum will be conducted on Tuesday, July 28 at 4:00 p.m. at the Elk Park Methodist Church with Rev. Preston Thomas and Rev. Lonnie Barnes officiating. Interment will follow in the Elk Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until the service hour.

Dean Oaks, 62, of the Roaring Creek Community passed away on July 26, 2015 at his residence.

He was born February 17, 1953 in Mitchell County, a son of the late Taylor and Ruby Hughes Oaks.

Dean was a member of the Peoples Church and worked in carpentry all his life.

He was an avid collector of guns and knives and enjoyed gardening and motorcycles, but his biggest joy was his family and grandchildren.

Along with his parents, Dean was preceded in death by his: sister, Sue Dellinger, nephew, David Oaks.

Dean has left to cherish his memory his: wife of 37 years, Debbie Oaks of the home; sons, Nathan Oaks and wife Amy of Roaring Creek; Jason and wife Tabitha of Roaring Creek; grandchildren, Serenity Oaks, Addie Oaks, Jaylynn Oaks, Caitlin Oaks; brother, Von Oaks and wife Jean of Ingalls; sister, Kate Thomas and husband Tom of Roaring Creek; nephew, Chris Dellinger and wife Rita of Henson Creek, Greg Hughes and wife Donna of Roaring Creek; nieces, Gretta Trivett and husband Jerry of Little Plumtree Creek, Debbie Ward and husband Kenny of Ingalls; numerous friends and relatives.

Funeral services for Dean Oaks will be conducted on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at 7:00 pm in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Chris Nance and Rev. Daniel Nance officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until the service hour. Interment services will be Wednesday, July 29th 11a.m. in the Hughes Cemetery.

A son of William Linnie Frisbee, Sr, of Newland, North Carolina and Donna McKinney Ollis, of Minneapolis, North Carolina. 

Mr. Frisbee is survived by, his wife, Selena English Frisbee, of Linville, North Carolina, three children, Kristen Kish, of Michigan, Masey Frisbee and Monica Frisbee both of the home, three sisters, Julie Manning, Caroline Frisbee, Lashaun Bjordahl, one brother, Lamar Manning, Paternal Grandmother, Louise Braswell Rominger, of Newland, one aunt, Donna Rominger, of Blowing Rock, three uncles, Joe Frisbee of Morganton, D.L. McKinney of Minneapolis, North Carolina and Andy Rominger, of Newland, two special first cousins, Richard Rominger, of Denver, Colorado, Lisa Frisbee, of Charlotte, North Carolina and a number of cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, James O. Rominger, Jr.

Funeral services for Mr. William Frisbee will be conducted Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at 3:00 o’clock at Sugar Mountain Baptist Church. The body will lie in state from 1:00 until 3:00 o’clock at the church. Reverend Donnie Ford will officiate. Interment will follow in Blue Bird Cemetery. 

The family receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 o’clock, prior to the service at the church.

Mrs. Greene is survived by one daughter, Wilma Greene Harmon and husband Sidney, of Statesville, three sons, Larry Greene and wife Billie, of Fleetwood, Gary Greene and Allen Greene both of Fleetwood, three granddaughters, Amy Ferron and husband Patrick, of Statesville, Heather Chamberlin and husband Jack, of Salem, West Virginia, and Wendy Hester and husband David, of Lenoir, three grandsons, Bradley Greene, Travis Greene and Gary Greene, II, all of Fleetwood, twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Cecil F. Green, her father and mother, Cliance F. Broyhill and Beulah Younce Broyhill, two twin grandchildren, Melanie Jean and Jodie Anatonette Greene, three brothers, Burl Broyhill, J.D. Broyhill and Dewey Broyhill, and two sisters, Hazel Payne and Evelyn Cole.

Funeral services for Mrs. Opal Broyhill will be conducted Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at 4:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend John Elledge will officiate. Interment will follow in Liberty Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon from 3 until 4 one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mack S Isaacs (May 28, 1921 – July 25, 2015)

Mack Stewart Isaacs, 94, of Newland passed away on July 25, 2015 at his residence.

A native of Avery County, he was born May 28, 1921 a son of the late Benjamin Harrison and Loretta Banner Isaacs.

He was a Farmer and Cattleman. Mack was a graduate of Lees-McRae College. He served his country during World War II in the 101 Airborne Division, having fought in the Battle of the Bulge, where he received the Purple Heart. Mr. Isaacs was honorably discharged in 1945 after earning the rank of Tech Sergeant. He served for 10 years in the North Carolina House of Representatives. Mack was an Elder in the Newland Presbyterian Church.

Mack has left to cherish his memory his wife, Marie Scott Isaacs of the home; brother, Morris Isaacs, and his wife, Marie, of Newland; niece, Marcye Ollis and her husband, Bros, of Newland; nephew, Michael Isaacs, and his wife, Missy, of Newland; great nephew, Riley.

Funeral services for Mack Stewart Isaacs will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at the Newland Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in the Newland Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Pat Ray Post of the VFW.

Gregory P. Isaacs (Feb. 24, 1956 – July 23, 2015)

Gregory Paul Greg Isaacs, 59, of Greenbriar Road, Boone, passed away Thursday evening, July 23, 2015 at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Banner Elk. Greg was born February 24, 1956 in Watauga County.

He was educated in the Watauga County School System, received his BA degree from Appalachian State University in Chemistry and Biology, and his Clinical Laboratory Scientist degree from Western Carolina. Greg was a veteran of the United States Army. He enjoyed playing the guitar and loved R&B music.

Mr. Isaacs is survived by his mother, Josephine Jo Isaacs of Boone; uncle, Wiley Norman Combs of Pineville; two aunts, Kathleen Combs Moore of Vilas and Laura Jean McGuire of Blowing Rock; a number of cousins; and his caregiver and friend, Angie Dotson of Boone.

Greg was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Cosper Isaacs, and his father, Paul Hoover Isaacs.

Funeral services for Greg Isaacs will be conducted Sunday afternoon, July 26, at 3 oclock, at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Butch Reese. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 2 until 3 oclock, one hour prior to services, at Austin & Barnes. Military graveside honors, provided by the American Legion Post 130, will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

At other times, the family will be at the home of his mother, Jo Isaacs, 251 Greenbriar Road, Boone, NC.

A native of Avery County, she was born January 4, 1968 a daughter of Roger Woodie of Newland and the late Doris Cornett Woodie.

Along with her father, Cynthia has left to cherish her memory her husband Brian Keith Pritchard of the home and her son, Zack Pritchard also of the home.

Family, friends and pallbearers will meet on Saturday, July 25th at 2:00 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home to go in procession to Newland Cemetery for interment services.

Sherrill Morgan Costner, Sr., 85, of the Oak Hill Community in Morganton passed away on July 22, 2015 at his residence.

He was born February 26, 1930 in Cleveland, Co. a son of the late Rev. Joseph Wheeler and Cora Lee Canley Costner.

Sherrill was a Sgt. for the U.S. Army where he served during the Korean Conflict.

He was a Truck Driver and enjoyed going to livestock markets, playing rummy, watching polka dancing on TV and he loved horse shows.

Along with his parents, Sherrill was preceded in death by his: brother, Joseph Wheeler Costner, Jr.; sisters, Mozelle Costner Parker, Laura Pauline Costner.

Sherrill has left to cherish his memory his: daughter, Sherry Wright and husband Danny of Linville; sons, Morgan Costner and wife Lana of Crossnore, Ricky Costner and wife Kitty of Granite Falls, William Costner and wife Tammy of Linville; grandchildren, Kelly Ward and husband Ricky, Kevin Wright, Jessica Drum and husband Quincey, Sean Costner and fiance Kasadee, Kristen Costner, Josh Costner and wife Lacey, Kayla Ross and husband Mark; nine great grandchildren; ; two nephews; one niece.

Timothy Franklin Hedgecock (March 4, 1972 – July 21, 2015)

Timothy Franklin Hedgecock, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at age 43.

Timothy (Tim) was born March 4, 1972, the son of Rebecca McGee Hedgecock, and the late Carroll Franklin Hedgecock. Tim’s family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service celebrating Tim’s life on Monday, July 27, 2015 at 2:00pm at First Presbyterian Church in Concord.

The family will receive friends in Davis Hall of First Presbyterian Church following the memorial service. There will be a private internment service at Memorial Gardens in Concord. Tim enjoyed a happy childhood, growing up surrounded by loving family and many friends. A graduate of East Forsyth High School, Tim was further educated at Wake Forest University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

After college he entered the political community working first as the Western North Carolina Field Representative for Senator Lauch Faircloth, and later enjoyed a successful and rewarding career in pharmaceutical and medical device sales. Growing up, Tim was active in the Boy Scouts of America and later, as an adult, he tirelessly volunteered in assisting Boy Scout Troop 59 in their local activities.

Tim learned to love the outdoors from his father, and throughout his life he was an active outdoorsman. Tim particularly loved hunting, fishing and camping with his son, Walker. Tim was preceded in death by his father, Carroll Franklin Hedgecock and he is survived by his mother, Rebecca McGee Hedgecock of Kernersville, NC; and by his wife Caroline Cress McIver Hedgecock; daughter, Abigail Cress Hedgecock; and son, Walker Franklin Hedgecock, all of Concord, NC. Additionally, he is survived by his grandmother, Edith Glidewell McGee and an extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The family requests that memorials in memory of Tim be sent to Boy Scout Troop 59 at 2400 Old Concord Salisbury Road, Concord, NC 28025 or to the Todd Hobbie Scholarship Fund at First Presbyterian Church, PO Box 789, Concord, NC 28026. Winnie Jones Thomas (Oct. 29, 1923

Mrs. Winnie Jones Thomas, 91, of North Fork Road, Zionville, widow of Lee Thomas, passed away Tuesday afternoon, July 21, 2015.

Mrs. Thomas was born October 29, 1923 in Ashe County, a daughter of the late Joseph Floyd Jones and Bertha Reedy Jones. She was a homemaker and retired seamstress at Shadowline of Boone. She was a member of Union Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir and WMU, and will be remembered for the bounty of wonderful cooking she provided for church dinners.

Mrs. Thomas is survived by one son, Ronnie Thomas and wife Rosedna of Zionville; one daughter, Joan Campbell and husband David “Red” Campbell of Zionville; three granddaughters, Lynne Isaacs and husband Steve of Vilas; Sue Combs and husband Lynn, and Amy Moody and husband Steven, all of Zionville; three great-grandsons, David Combs and wife Amanda, and Daniel Combs and wife Ashley, all of Zionville, and Thomas Isaacs and wife Sydeena of Vilas; one great-granddaughter, Addison Moody of Zionville; three great-great-granddaughters, Harper, Hadley and Olivia Combs; one sister, Polly Osborne of West Jefferson; and two sister-in-laws, Kate Warren of Portsmouth, Virginia, and Jean Graybeal of Zionville. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Thomas; two sisters, Iona Ward and infant Helen Jones; and two brothers, Kermit and Wayne Jones.

Funeral services for Mrs. Winnie Jones Thomas will be conducted Friday afternoon, July 24, 2015 at 2:00 o’clock at Union Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00. Officiating will be Pastor Vernon Eller, Reverend Derick Wilson and Reverend Bill Warren.

Burial will follow in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends Thursday evening, from 6:30 until 8:30, at Hampton Funeral Service.

At other times, friends may call at the Winnie Thomas Residence in Zionville.
