Jan. 21, 2014.Both Avery County Schools and Watauga County Schools have cancelled Tuesday classes in anticipation of the winter storm that is forecasted for today.

The winter storm warning went into affect at 4 a.m. this morning. While other regions of the National Weather Service’s Blacksburg, Va., office have already seen snowfall, the High Country is expected to begin receiving snow at 10 a.m., according to a map by the NWS.

The “sunny and breezy” conditions on MLK Day will change to more seasonal winter weather as a cold front moves through the Southern Appalachians on Tuesday morning, bringing isolated double-digit snow accumulation “for prime high elevations” along the western escarpment and frigid temperatures to all, according to Ray’s Weather Center’s forecast.

But for the most part of the High Country, three to six inches seems to be the general outlook forecasted by the National Weather Service (NWS) and Ray’s Weather Center. The Winter Storm Watch ends at 11 p.m. Tuesday.

The low temperatures will be as follows: 6 on Tuesday; 15 on Wednesday; 0 on Thursday; and 13 on Friday, according to Ray’s Weather five-day forecast. Check out Ray’s snow forecast map here
