
Oct. 14, 2013. Investigators with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office arrested 19-year-old Calvin Metcalf on Oct. 8 on a felony probation violation and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. After his arrest Metcalf made admissions about passing checks from a friends checking account without their knowledge. Investigators are following up on the unauthorized checks and charges are pending.

Officers with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office arrested 47-year-old Lester Eugene Harmon of Elk River Rd on Oct. 10. Harmon had been arrested previously on felony drug charges and an order for arrest was issued when he failed to appear on the original charges. Harmon was placed under a $150,000 bond at the Avery County Jail.

Officers encountered 27-year-old Rebecca Clawson when Harmon was arrested. Clawson had outstanding charges for her arrest also. Clawson was charged with possession of methamphetamine and manufacturing of methamphetamine. Clawson was placed under a $125,000 bond. The original charge on Harmon and the outstanding charge on Clawson were charged as a result of items found on Aug. 31 at a camper on Elk River Road where Harmon was staying at the time.

25-year-old Jeffrey Prince of Prison Camp Road was charged with possession of controlled substance on jail premises on the evening of Oct. 10. Prince was arrested earlier on a misdemeanor charge and brought into the jail. While being booked into the jail Prince was found to have a small amount of marijuana in his possession.
Investigators with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office investigated a death on Roaring Creek Road on the morning of Oct. 12. 67-year-old Toua Lo of Nebo was found in a wooded area by two hikers around 10:00 a.m. Lo was approximately forty feet from his truck, which was parked near the end of Roaring Creek Road on Forest Service Land. The two hikers (a doctor and a physician assistant) attempted CPR on Lo and called 911. Lo was on a hunting trip to the area with friends. Lo earlier notified friends that he was having chest pains and was returning to his truck.
