Avery Sheriff Kevin Frye ‘Honored and Humbled’ To Be Elected President of N.C. Sheriff’s Association

Aug. 8, 2013. Avery County Sheriff Kevin Frye is now the president of the North Carolina Sheriff’s Association. Justice Paul Newby swore Frye in at a training conference banquet in Wilmington on July 30, and U.S. Representative Mark Meadows of District 11 touted Frye in a speech.

Speaking on Thursday, Frye said he was honored and humbled to be selected for the position by his fellow sheriffs from across the state.

“I think it’s a great opportunity. I am very honored and humbled that the rest of the sheriff’s would elect somebody from a small rural county like Avery to be president of the North Carolina Sheriff’s Association,” Frye said, adding that the last time a sheriff from Western North Carolina received the honor was in 2004, when Wilkes County Sheriff Dane Mastin held the post.

“It’s rare. In 91 years of the history of the sheriff’s association, only 10 [presidents have been] from the very Western part of North Carolina, the mountain areas,” Frye said.

He noted that his selection will be beneficial not only for Avery County but for Western North Carolina, in general, because he will be able to network across the state and nation and formulate changes in legislation.

“It’s going to be great for Avery County and the surrounding counties to have a really strong voice,” Frye said. “I am excited about the opportunity to represent our area in the state and the nation.”
