Fill Up on Chili from Local Restaurants on Jan. 30 to Help Shelter Pets in Avery County

By Shannon Cuthrell

Pepper, Avery Humane
Pepper, a 6-year-old male chihuahua, needs a home! He is loyal, smart and loves to be petted. Call 828-898-5625 for more information.

Join the Avery Humane Society for a chili-cook off fundraiser on Jan. 30 to help provide for the pets in its care. Tickets at $10 for adults and $5 for children — a small price to pay to try recipes from some of the area’s best restaurants.

A ticket will get you a chance to try the recipes, a beverage to go with them and a ballot to cast your vote for the best chili.

The fundraiser will take place at the shelter, 270 Vale Road in Newland, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day.

The chili recipes will hail from nine local restaurants — The Mason Jar Café, The Pedalin’ Pig, Sorrento’s Italian Bistro, Jackalopes View Restaurant, Dunn’s Deli of Banner Elk, Pet Prairie Dog Retreat, Reid’s Catering, Carolina BBQ and Beech Alpen Inn. Banner Elk winery will also provide a wine tasting.

Avery Humane Society Chair Erika Siegel, also owner of My Best Friend’s Barkery dog and cat product store in Banner Elk, said all proceeds will support the animals at the shelter.

The shelter facilitated adoptions for 675 dogs, cats and small animals last year alone, and more than 736 animals were spayed our neutered through its program.

With so many animals in need of its help, the shelter, which operates entirely on community support, is constantly in need of donations and volunteers.

“This is our first time doing this for the shelter,” Siegel noted. “We thought this would warm the community’s bellies and give them a chance to vote for the best chili.”

Tickets are available to the public at the shelter, My Best Friend’s Barkery or at the door on Saturday.

“We’re looking forward to our first chili cook-off and we have some fundraising going on in the future,” said Siegel.

Fundraisers in the future will include a birthday bash for the shelter in the spring and a 5K race in early June.

For more information on the cook-off, call Siegel at 828-898-5625 or reach her by email at esiegel@mybestfriendsbarkery.com.
