Avery County Sheriff’s Office Meth Round-Up

On April 12, deputies with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report from a member of the community about a possible methamphetamine lab on Sugar Mountain #2 Road. Officers observed items consistent with a methamphetamine lab in the area and obtained a search warrant for the residence. The search warrant was served, and 37-year-old Michael Haney and 38-year-old Traci Haney were both arrested. Both were charged with Manufacturing Methamphetamine and Possession of Precursor Chemicals and were placed under a $125,000 bond at the Avery County Jail.

Early on the morning of April 15, deputies with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office made a traffic stop on Mullin Hill Road. Officers spoke with the driver 35-year-old Chad Alan Byrd and the passenger, 36-year-old Melaine Owen of Ashe County. A search of the vehicle driven by Byrd and the two occupants resulted in the arrest of both Byrd and Owen. Owen was charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of Marijuana. Byrd received a $15,000 bond.

Late in the evening on April 15, officers with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office encountered 31-year-old Christopher Harrison of Beam Avenue and 42-year-old Jessie Proffitt of Morganton at a local convenience store. Officers searched the vehicle occupied by the two men and located items of paraphernalia and a substance believed to be methamphetamine. Both men were charged with several felony and misdemeanor drug charges. Proffitt was placed under a $31,000.00 bond and Harrison was placed under a $25,000 bond at the Avery County Jail.
