March 7, 2013. Avery County Schools is offering free Pre-Kindergarten screening sessions at all the elementary schools for children who will be 3 years old or 4 years old on or before August 31, 2013.
• Monday, April 29 – Banner Elk Elementary
• Tuesday, April 30 – Crossnore Elementary
• Wednesday, May 1 – Riverside Elementary
• Thursday, May 2 – Freedom Trail Elementary
• Friday, May 3 – Newland Elementary

Items needed at the time of screening include proof of residence and proof of income.
Applications are available at your neighborhood elementary school; at the Avery County School Board, located at 775 Cranberry Street in Newland; and online in a printable form at http://www.averyschools.net//Domain/23.
After the application process is complete, each Pre-K teacher will contact applicants for a free screening appointment at their respective school. During the screening process, parents and children will be allowed to explore the Pre-K classrooms to meet new classmates, teachers and school administrators.
Birth to kindergarten certified lead teachers are in all classrooms and child-care credentialed assistants are in all classrooms, too.
