Otis Dale Lewis (March 16, 1950 – Sept. 29, 2014)
Otis Dale Lewis, 64, of Newland passed away on Sept. 27, 2014 at Mission Hospital Memorial Campus in Asheville.
A native of Avery County, he was born March 16, 1950 a son of the late Quincy Otis and Dorothy Arlena Birchfield Lewis.
He was attended Johnson Chapel. Dale was a supporter of Hunters Helping Kids and member of the Carys Flat Coon Club. He enjoyed coon hunting, farming, dog training, being outdoors and his grandchildren.
Along with his parents, Otis was preceded in death by his: wife, Glenda Buchanan Lewis; daughter, Kimberly Lynn Barlow; brother, Frankie Darrell Lewis.
Dale has left to cherish his memory his: daughters, Teresa Carpenter and husband Richard of Newland, Tammy Arnett and husband James of Newland; sons, Anthony Lewis and wife Jennifer of Cranberry, Jonathan Lewis of Newland; sister, Linda McCoury of Newland; 14 grandchildren.
Funeral services for Otis Dale Lewis will be conducted on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014 at 8 p.m. at the Grandfather Chapel with Rev. David Ray and Rev. Reggie Oaks officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until the service hour. Family, friends and pallbearers will meet at the funeral home on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 10 a.m. to go in procession to the Ashley Cemetery for interment services. Pallbears will be: Richard Dale Carpenter, James Arnett, III, Dana Huffman, Babe Clark, Wade Ollis and Richard Carpenter.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Hunters Helping Kids.
Leona Benfield Hughes (Aug. 22, 1926 – Sept. 25, 2014)
Leona Benfield Hughes, 88, of Charlotte passed away on Sept. 25, 2014 at CMC of Pineville, NC.
A native of Avery County, she was born Aug. 22, 1926 a daughter of the late Dartie E. and Margie Warren Benfield.
Leona was a 1944 graduate of Newland High School and married her high school sweetheart, Jack Wilburn Hughes.
She was very active for many years in her church and choir at Charlotte Gospel Chapel. Singing was a passion of hers along with living for The Lord. She devoted her life to bringing others to know Christ.
Along with her parents, Leona was preceded in death by her: husband, Jack Wilburn Hughes; brothers, Kenneth Benfield, Warren Benfield.
Leona loved her family and was very close to all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed being involved with all of their activities.
She has left to cherish her memory her: daughter, Nina Ferrando of Lancaster, SC.; sons, Terry Hughes of Charlotte, David W. Hughes and wife Sonya of Lincolnton, NC; sisters, Katherine McDowell of Stanley, NC., Betty Jo Buchanan of Newland, NC., Peggy Buchanan of Spruce Pine, NC; grandchildren, Dana Hilton and husband Jason of Lancaster, SC.. Bryan Hughes and wife Erin of Charlotte, NC., Stacey Hughes and fiance Rob Ralph of Charlotte; great grandchildren,4 year old twins Riles & Alexis Hilton, Bryn Hughes age 3, Aubry Hughes age 1.
Funeral services for Leona Benfield Hughes will be conducted on Monday, September 29th at 2:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. William Waters officiating. Interment will follow in the Hughes Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services. A Memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 5th at 2:00 p.m. at the Charlotte Gospel Chapel at 12001 N. Tyron St. Charlotte, NC 28262.

Ira Luther Clark (April 9, 1936 – Sept. 25, 2014)
Ira Luther Clark, 78, of the Ingalls Community passed away on Sept. 25, 2014 at his residence.
A native of Avery County, he was born April 9, 1936 a son of the late Myron Luther and Victoria Townsend Clark.
He was a member of the US Army and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and blue grass music. Ira learned how to play the banjo in the past year.
Along with his parents, Ira was preceded in death by his: sisters, Omalee Yates and Daisy Snipes.

Joseph Dennis Hicks (March 2, 1943 – Sept. 22, 2014)
Joseph Dennis Hicks, 71, passed away peacefully at his Banner Elk home on Monday, Sept. 22, 2014.
Joe was born March 2, 1943, to Joseph and Maxie Hicks in Paducah, Kentucky. As an avid music lover, he served as a former president of the Western Piedmont Symphony, enjoyed playing the trumpet in school and learned how to play the banjo more recently.
He was a huge Kentucky Basketball fan, proud to have also been inducted into the Hall of Engineering at the University of Kentucky (Go Wildcats!). Joe loved to golf and was a member of Elk River Golf Club. He cultivated a love for animals throughout the family and was a longtime supporter of the Catawba County Humane Society. Joe was President and CEO of Siecor Corporation from 1989 to 1999, served on the Advisory Board of Fuqua School of Business at Duke University and the Board of trustees at Catawba Memorial Hospital.
Joe is survived by his wife, Tannyjha, and his children, Jennifer Grindel of Sylva, NC; Stephanie Hicks of Hickory, NC; Ashley Goodfellow of Austin, TX, Matthew Goodfellow and wife, Alyson, of Martinez, GA; and his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Joey, Thai, Zachary, Austin, Jackson and Sara. Along with his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Mary.
A private memorial service will be held at Mr. Hicks’ home in Banner Elk on Saturday. Nell Stamey Aldridge (Oct. 23, 1923 – Sept. 22, 2014)
Nelta (Nell) Marie Stamey Aldridge, 91, of Crossnore passed away Sept. 22, 2014, at her home. She was born on Oct. 23, 1922 in Burke County, the daughter of Clayton O. Stamey and Belle Bowman Stamey.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William N. Aldridge, her daughter, Luann Aldridge, and her brothers James Helton and Paul Stamey. She is survived by her daughter, Dawn Aldridge Poore, her grandchildren, Leigh Ann Light (Dennis), Vanessa Loven Brown, Michaelle Poore (Michael Hayes), Susan Hall (Douglas) and Joelle Poore, 11 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
After their marriage, Nell and Bill spent several years in California, returned home, then moved to Michigan before finally returning to Crossnore. She and Bill traveled extensively, including travels with his work with the North Carolina Christmas Tree Growers Association, as well as touring many places with friends.
She attended Jonas Ridge School and later graduated from the Crossnore High School Business Course. She worked for many years in Spruce Pine as a bookkeeper, before becoming the secretary for Crossnore First Baptist Church and later the Town of Crossnore and Dr. EH Smith.
Visitation will be held Friday, Sept. 26, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Crossnore First Baptist Church, followed by the funeral service at 7:00 pm. The Reverends Dennis Aldridge, Benny Johnson and Lander Heafner will officiate.
