The much beloved Ella Mae Burleson went home to meet her Lord on Monday, September 16, 2013 at the age of 100 having been born on September 12, 1913. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle James Burleson and daughter Jean Feigley. 

She is survived by her children: Genevieve Clemens, Round Hill, VA; Anna Aldridge, Wilkesboro, NC; Millie Renfro, Newland, NC; Wayne Burleson, Herndon, VA and Donna Clark, Newland, NC. 

Also Surviving are 12 grandchildren, 17 great grand children, 8 great-great grandchildren, 4 sisters, 1 brother and many nieces and nephews. 

Mrs. Burleson was a life long resident of Avery County and a long time member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Newland, NC. She was known as a hard working woman all her life, deeply devoted and committed to God and to her family. In addition to the deep love she had for God and her family, she found great joy and satisfaction in her vegetable garden and was especially known for the beautiful tomatoes and potatoes she grew along with many other vegetables. 

Visitation and viewing will be Friday evening, September 20th from 6 to 8 pm at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Newland, MC. A memorial service will immediately follow the time of visitation at 8pm. Interment will be Saturday morning, September 21st at 10am at the Burleson Cemetery located on Spanish Oak Rd., Newland, NC. Rev. Tony Clark officiating.

Mrs. Beatrice Winebarger Chappell, age 95, of Banner Elk passed away on September 11, 2013 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk. 

Beatrice was the daughter of the late Jake and Elizabeth Winebarger. 

She attended Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Banner Elk and was retired from Cannon Memorial Hospital. 

She was preceded in death by her husband Edward T. Chappell. 

Survivors are: three sons, Frank, Don and Terry; one sister and two brothers, nine grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. 

Funeral services for Beatrice Winebarger Chappell will be conducted on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at the Mount Calvary Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. with the Revs. Dean Baughn and George Wright officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the church. 

The family respectfully requests no flowers and that memorial donations be made to the Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Land Acquisition Fund, PO Box 125 Banner Elk, NC 28604.

Janie Belinda Jones, D. Sept. 11, 2013

Janie Belinda Jones, age 59, of Roan Mountain passed away on September 11, 2013 at Johnson City Medical Center. 

A native of Avery County, she was born September 6, 1954 a daughter of Mary Ruth Hicks of Roan Mountain and the late James Hicks. 

She was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. 

Along with her father, James Hicks, Janie was preceded in death by her: husband, Steven Ray Jones; brother, James Robert Hicks. 

Janie loved spending time with her family and grandchildren and being caretaker of her family. 

Along with her mother, Mary Hicks, Janie has left to cherish her memory her: children; Stephen Allen Jones of Roan Mtn., Crystal Kay Jones and spouse Nathan Trivette of Old Beech Mtn., Mary Ann Jones of Roan Mtn., James Ray Jones and wife Rebecca of Newland; sister, Gelinda Kay Brown and spouse Bud Hearne of Mountain City, TN; brother Kenneth Hicks of Roan Mtn.; 11 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; 5 nieces; 5 nephews. 

Funeral services for Janie Belinda Jones will be conducted on Friday, September 13th at 4:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Bryan Griffith and Rev. Don Winters officiating. Interment will follow in the Hicks Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until the service hour.
