Bert Allen Trivett, 82, of Beech Mountain Road, Elk Park, passed away Monday evening, Oct. 6, 2014, at his home.

Born June 9, 1932, in Avery County, he was a son of Dave and Ruby Cook Trivett.

After serving in the US Army during the Korean Conflict, Bert returned to Avery County and worked as a self-employed rock mason in the area.

He was a member of Beech Mountain Baptist Church where he attended faithfully when he was able, and enjoyed raising his annual vegetable gardens.

Mr. Trivett is survived by his wife, Ann Nunley Trivett; son, Jimmy Trivett of Elk Park; four grandsons, Nathan, Jacob, Matthew and Luke Trivett, all of Elk Park; granddaughter, Summer Trivett of Johnson City, Tenn.; and two great-granddaughters, Tatum Cook of Johnson City, Tenn., and Candice Dawn Trivett of Elk Park.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Lincoln and Matthew Trivett; three brothers, Omer, Jim and Ustace Trivett; and four sisters, Pauline Kelley, Louise Oliver, Loy Trivett and Agnes Walsh.

Memorial services for Bert Allen Trivett were conducted at 6 p.m. Sunday evening, Oct. 12, 2014, at the Beech Mountain Community Center, officiated by the Rev. Dennis Church.

The family received friends from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday evening, prior to services, at the Community Center.

Jodie Farthing Reese Dugger (D. Oct. 4, 2014)

Jodie Farthing Reese Dugger, 90, of Burnsville, passed away Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, at her home.

A native of Watauga County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. E.J. and Lula Greene Farthing. She was also preceded in death by her husbands: Asa L. Reese Jr. and Oran H. Dugger; an infant son; a son: Michael Reese; stepson: Larry Dugger; three sisters: Alpha, Kizzie Mae and Lennis; and a brother: Blaine. Jodie grew up in the Bethel community of Watauga County. A graduate of Mars Hill College she was a riveter during World War II on the P-47. She and Asa L. were house parents at Crossnore School for 13 years. Jodie and Oran became residents of Burnsville in 1992 and she had been an active member at First Baptist Church since.

Surviving are her children: Marilyn Robinson of Burnsville, and Asa Lowell Reese of Tryon; a daughter-in-law: Mary Ann Dugger of Columbus, Ohio; seven grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a brother: Edmund Farthing and wife, Hazel, of Vilas; and, a special friend: Gordon MacFarlane.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2104, in the Calvin Farthing Family Cemetery in Vilas.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, at First Baptist Church of Burnsville. The Rev. Tommy James will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.

Nellie Dodson Hicks, 82, of Roaring Creek Road in Newland died Friday, Oct. 3, 2014 at the Charles A. Cannon Memorial Hospital.

Nellie was born on Jan. 25, 1932 in Criglersville, Va., and was the daughter of the late Wilburn and Pearl Nichols Dodson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Hicks who passed away in 2001. She was also preceded in death by her son, Billy H. Hicks; her granddaughter, Rebecca Pearl Hicks; and her sisters, Margie Law and Katherine May Dodson.

She dearly loved her family and spent her life taking care of them. She was good to everyone she met and never turned anyone away or let anyone leave her home hungry. She loved her flowers, gardening, and quilting. She was a member of the Sugar Mountain Baptist Church.

Left to cherish her memories are children; Janet Braswell and husband, Rabon of Newland; G.W. ‘Gordon’ Hicks of Promise City, Iowa; Garry Hicks and wife, Brenda of Newland; Leo Dean Hicks and wife, Shirley of Marion; and Ellen Dorean Hayes and husband, Mike of Newland; her sisters; Ruby Weakly of Madison, Va., and Rosie Beach of Spotsylvania, Va.,; her brother; Bruce Dodson of Madison, Va.,; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence at the funeral service honoring the life of Nellie Hicks on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Cole officiating. Interment will follow in the Hicks Family Cemetery. A time to receive friends, share memories and support the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, 2014 at Webb Funeral Home.

Johanna Elizabeth Paulsen (Aug. 31, 1943 – Oct. 3, 2014)

Johanna Elizabeth Paulsen, 71, of Los Angeles, Cal. passed away on Oct. 3, 2014 in Montezuma.

She was born Aug. 31, 1943 in Santa Monica, Cal., a daughter of the late Patrick and Alice Teubner Harrington. Johanna was of the Episcopalian Faith.

She was volunteer for Hospice in California and the Senior Center in Santa Clarita, CA. Johanna also enjoyed crocheting, reading and traveling.

Along with her parents, Johanna was preceded in death by her: husband, William Paulsen; infant daughter; sister, Tawny Asher; brother, Patrick Harrington.

Johanna has left to cherish her memory her: daughter, Alice Carroll and husband Chuck of Fredericksburg, Va.; sons, Nick Daniels and wife Regina of Crossnore, Michael Paulsen and wife Carol of Redondo Beach, Cal., Dennis Paulsen and wife Betty of Santa Clarita, Cal.; brothers, James Harrington of Hollywood, Cal., Kevin Harrington of Simi Valley, Cal.; four grandchildren; Preston Daniels, Chasity Majoni, Julian Paulsen, Max Paulsen; one great grandchild, Kale Daniels.

Graveside services will be conducted at a later date in the Oakwood Memorial Park in Chatsworth, Cal.

Danny Lee Dellinger (Aug. 1, 1954 – Oct. 2, 2014)

Danny Lee Dellinger, 60, of Spear, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014, at the St. Joseph’s campus of Mission hospitals in Asheville.

Danny was born on Aug. 1, 1954, in Enumclaw, Wash., but had lived most of his life in Avery County. Danny was an employee of Genesis Construction Company as a pipe fitter and welder. He was preceded in death by a stepson; Staff Sgt. Chad Barrett.

He loved to hunt, ride his motorcycle and his four-wheeler. More than this, he loved the fellowship he had with his family, church family and lifelong friends. He was a member of Yellow Mountain Baptist Church and he loved the Lord and was a great Christian witness.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife; Linda Jenkins Dellinger of the home; his daughter; Betsy Dellinger of Lick Log; his parents; Dave Dellinger Jr. and Helen Hughes Dellinger of Spear; his grandson; Garrett Dellinger of Lick Log his brothers; Dean Dellinger (Renee), Kenneth Dellinger (Pam) and Jeff Hughes (Niecy), all of Spear; his sisters; Diana Watson (Steve) of Pineola, Doris Buchanan (Donnie) of Spear, Kathy Trice (Bill) of Newland, and Janet Stockton (Jody) of Marion; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews; his stepson; Gary Barrett (Kari) of N. Las Vegas, Nev.; and his stepdaughter; Debi Cutlip (Bill) of Telford, Tenn.

Billy Hoover Turbyfill, 84, of Banner Elk passed away on Sept. 29, 2014 at his residence.

A native of Avery County, he was born April 30, 1930 a son of the late Warren Edward and Minnie Naomi Guy Turbyfill.

Billy served during the Korean Conflict for the U.S Army and retired from Broughton Hospital in Morganton.

He was a member of the Lower Shell Creek Christian Church and enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Along with his parents, Billy was preceded in death by his: wife, Gladys Lorraine Turbyfill; brother, Bob Turbyfill.

Billy was a loving man and Daddy who was has left to cherish his memory his: daughters, Taunia Erno and husband Harry of Linville, Jeanette Burleson and husband Bobby of Banner Elk; fiance, Marie Vance of Roan Mountain; sister, Lois Ward of Banner Elk; granddaughters, Brittany Hughes and husband Kacey of Frank, Bethany Burleson of Banner Elk; great grandson, Karter Hughes; a host of special nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Billy Hoover Turbyfill will be conducted on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at 8:00 pm at the Grandfather Chapel with Rev. Gerald Holly officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour. Family, friends and pallbearers will meet at the funeral home on Thursday, October 2nd at 10:00 a.m. to go in procession to the Heaton Cemetery for graveside services.
