Betty Jean Murrow (June 28, 1935 – Oct. 28, 2014)

Betty Jean Murrow, 79, of Axton, Va. passed away on Oct. 25, 2014 at her residence.

She was born June 28, 1935 in Avery County, a daughter of the late Ezell and Dolly Coffey Calloway.

Betty was a CNA and enjoyed watching TV and movies.

Along with her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her: first husband, Roy Scearce; brothers, Clyde, Claude, Bob; sisters, Grace Johnson and Mary Hodges.

Betty has left to cherish her memory her: husband, Henry Murrow of Martinsville, Va.; son, David Scearce of Lenoir; brother, Powell Calloway and wife, Mary, of Newland; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Betty Jean Murrow will be conducted on Thursday, Oct. 30, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Greater Joy Fellowship with Pastor Ronnie Pyatte officiating. Interment will follow in the Calloway Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services.

Dallas Young (Feb. 26, 1922 – Oct. 25, 2014)

Dallas Wilson Young, 92, passed away peacefully at his home on Roaring Creek surrounded by his children and grandchildren on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014.

Dallas was born on Feb. 26, 1922. He was the last surviving child of Garrett and Lily Hughes Young. Dallas was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Barbara Hoilman Young. Also preceding him in death were his brothers, Ford, Ershel, Floyd, Howard, and Malone Young; and sisters Bonnie Burleson and Oakey Hopson.

Dallas was a decorated WWII veteran. He always had a twinkle of mischief in his eyes and loved to pull pranks on everyone. He loved his home and garden, his hunting dogs, and all his friends and family. He was truly an “original”. Dallas will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure to know him. Rest in peace our sweet little Poppy.

Left to cherish his memory are his sons, Terry Young and wife, Mary of Squirrel Creek, Gary Young and Wanda Vance of Roaring Creek, GC Young and wife, Sherry of Newland, and Dale Young and wife Bertha of Senia; and his daughters, Anita McKinney and husband, Claude of Squirrel Creek, Leanna Young of Asheville, Susan Johnson and husband, Joe of Elk Park, and Patti Lloyd and husband, Doug of Black Mountain. He also left behind 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Newland. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 2:00p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Newland. Full military interment service will follow at Hughes Cemetery on Roaring Creek.

Fred A. Calhoun (Jan. 12, 1927 – Oct. 24, 2014)

Fred A.Calhoun, 87, of Newland passed away on Oct. 24, 2014 at Roan Highlands Nursing Center.

A native of Avery County, he was born Jan. 12, 1927 a son of the late Columbus “Lum” and Elizabeth “Lizzy” Gouge Calhoun.

He was a veteran and served during WWII for the U.S. Navy and during the Korean Conflict with the Air Force. He was an electrician and retired from Great Lakes Carbon Corporation in Morganton. Fred was a member of Cranberry Baptist Church and enjoyed clock making, gardening, playing guitar and loved watching Atlanta Braves baseball.

Along with his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his: sisters, Rhetta Vance, Leona Pyatte, Ethel Hicks, Kate Miller, Melba Massingill, Faye Sparks; and brother, Frank Calhoun.

Fred has left to cherish his memory his: wife of 49 years, Grace Calhoun of the home; daughters, Tammy Gardner of Newland, Tracy Brewer and husband Tim of Newland; sons, Randy Calhoun and wife Karen of Spruce Pine, David Calhoun and wife Michelle of Newland; sisters, Ruth McCue of Johnson City, Tenn, Mary Sexton; five grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Fred A. Calhoun will be conducted on Monday, Oct. 27, 2014 at 8 p.m. at the Grandfather Chapel with Rev. David Burnop and Rev. Donnie Thomas. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until the service hour. Family, friends and pallbearers will meet at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 10:00 a.m. to go in procession to the Church of Jesus Christ Cemetery for graveside services.

Terry Lee Cardwell (July 17, 1955 – Oct. 24, 2014)

Terry Lee Cardwell, 59, of Collettsville passed away on Oct. 24, 2014 at his residence.

He was born July 17, 1955 the son of the late James and Addie Donovan Cardwell.

Terry served in the U.S. Army during Peacetime and enjoyed painting, guitar and playing the XBox.

Terry has left to cherish his memory his: sons, James Cardwell and wife Khristina of Roan Mountain, Tenn., Scott Cardwell of Roan Mountain, Tenn.; fiance, Susan Harmon of the home; sister, Beverly Odom of Collettsville; granddaughter, Lora Cardwell of Roan Mountain, Tenn.; and his “Fur Babies” Harley and Sassy.

Graveside Services for Mr. Terry Lee Cardwell will be Monday, Oct. 27 12:00 p.m. in the Markland Cemetery with Pastor Brandon Young officiating.
