Barbara Brewer Styles, 75, of Newland passed away on Nov. 10, 2014 at Cannon Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family.

She was born May 30, 1939, a daughter of the late Kenneth James and Etta Clarisse Moody Brewer.

Barbara was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and enjoyed being with her grandchildren, crocheting and collecting thimbles.

Along with her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her: husband, Eddie Styles; sisters, Juanita Cuthbertson, Priscilla Waycaster; brothers, Ed Brewer, Robert Brewer, Richard Brewer and Jim Brewer.

Barbara has left to cherish her memory her: daughters, Darlene Carpenter and husband Robbie of Newland, Tammy Banner and husband Charlie of Newland; son, Mike Puett and wife Sherry of Jonas Ridge; brothers, Kenneth Brewer and wife Dorothy of Shelby, Roy Brewer and wife Brenda of Newland: grandchildren, Chantae Calhoun Hoilman, TC Calhoun, Amanda Puett Arnett, Charlie Banner, Matthew Gwyn, Samantha Puett Goforth, Brooke Carpenter Wise, Casey Banner, Cody Carpenter, Logan Carpenter, Christian Banner; 10 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Barbara Brewer Styles will be conducted on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 8 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Clay Waycaster officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until the service hour.

Ray Calvert, 86, of Linville passed away on Nov. 9, 2014, at his residence.

A native of Avery County, he was born Dec. 11, 1927 a son of the late James Mose and Matilda Owens Calvert.

He was a former member and chief of Linville Volunteer Fire Department and enjoyed building things, gardening and landscaping.

Along with his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his: sisters, Magdeline Cooke, Margaret Jean Black; brothers, William Earl Calvert, Paul Calvert, “Junior” Calvert; and daughter, Patricia Calvert.

Ray has left to cherish his memory his: wife, Jean Franklin Calvert; granddaughter, Bridgett Rae Morgan and husband Jason of Roan Mountain; grandson, Shawn Calvert and fiance Tricia of Linville; great granddaughter, Madison Calvert of Asheville; future great grandson, Ridge Allen Morgan; sisters, JoAnne Hunnicutt of Asheville, Marie Norman of Elk Park and Helen Rose of Marion.

Funeral services for Ray Calvert will be conducted on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 8 pm at the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Dr. Ken Harper officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until the service hour.

Rowena Vance, 88, of Newland passed away on Nov. 5, 2014 at Watauga Medical Center.

A native of Avery County, she was born Nov. 22, 1925, a daughter of the late Asbury and Margie Banks Dyson.

She was a loving Christian woman who was always trying to help a friend.

Along with her parents, Rowena was preceded in death by a daughter, Lula Belle Bare; grandson, Charles Vance; and granddaughter Summer Stout.

Rowena has left to cherish her memory a daughter, Mary Penfield; grandson, Leland and Jessica Penfield; granddaughter, Deborah and Steve Carpenter; eight great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral services for Rowena Vance will be conducted on Sunday, Nov. 9, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy McGuire officiating. Interment will follow in the Daniels Cemetery. The family will gather with friends one hour prior to the services Sunday at the funeral home.

Kenneth Joseph Bolling, 76, of Newland passed away on Nov. 4, 2014 at his residence.

He was born May 20, 1938 in Brooklyn, N.Y., a son of the late Joseph and Ruth Hoadley Bolling.

Kenneth was the owner and operator of the Blind Shop & Closet Design in Boone for many years.

He was a member of St. Mary’s in East Islip, the East Islip Volunteer Fire Department and was very involved with the Little League of the Islips. He also enjoyed playing golf and was the “official coffee maker” at the Italian Restaurant in Pineola.

Along with his parents, Kenneth was preceded in death by his sister, Delores Lattanzi.

Kenneth has left to cherish his memory his: wife, Carol Ann Bolling of the home; daughters, Linda Levick and husband Jeff of Austin, Tex., Tricia West-Jozwiak of Sayville, N.Y.., Christine Fontana of Farmingville, N.Y.; sons, Kenneth W. Bolling and wife Shana of Maiden, N.C., Michael Bolling of Vilas, N.C.; brothers, Michael Hoadley and wife Mary of Simi Valley, Cal., Hal Hoadley of Moorpark, Cal., Kevin Hoadley of Westlake Village, Cal.; and 14 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2014, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.
