Cordelia Dellinger Kidder ,age 90, of Crossnore passed away on March 5, 2013 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

A native of Avery County, she was born October 20, 1922 a daughter of the late Theron Colbert and Lena Sloop Dellinger.

She was a member of Crossnore Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder.

Cordelia enjoyed gardening and geology and was very instrumental in her husband’s archaeological work.

Along with her parents, Cordelia was preceded in death by her: sisters, Annie Laura Stewart, Ruth Palmer Loper; brother, William Colbert Dellinger.

Cordelia has left to cherish her memory her: husband, J. Edward Kidder of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, David D. and Jane Kidder of Freeport, ME., Jonathan E. and Pamela Kidder, of Wake Forest, NC; Paul M. and Terry Kidder of Atlanta, GA, James H. and Melanie Kidder of Knoxville, TN; sisters, Mary Agnes Smith of Orlando, FL., Rachel Deal of Crossnore; 10 grandchildren; 1 great granddaughter.

Funeral services for Cordelia Dellinger Kidder will be announced at a later date.

Henry “Bud” Fabben, age 79, of Newland passed away on March 3, 2013 at his residence.

He was born May 16, 1933 in Mildland Park, NJ the son of the late Gary and Johanna Mulder Fabben.

Bud was a member of the US Army and served in Korea.

He was a member of Aaron Baptist Church of Montezuma and retired from the US Postal Service after 37 years.

Along with his parents, Henry was preceded in death by his: sister, Arlene Abma; daughter, Beverly Strone.

A wonderful husband, father and grandfather; Bud has left to cherish his memory his: wife, Betty Fabben of the home; daughter, Bonnie Whitehead and husband John of West Palm Beach, FL.; sons, Glenn Fabben and wife Nancy of West Palm Beach, FL., Brad Fabben and special friend Jamie Snelgrove of Lakeworth, FL.; grandchildren, Elaine, Kimberly, Sara, Holly, Lindsay, John; great grandchildren, Ryder and Easton.

Funeral services for Henry “Bud” Fabben will be conducted on Saturday, March 9th 2:00 p.m. at Aaron Baptist Church with Rev. John Whitehead and Rev. Dennis Aldridge officiating.

Edith Odom Parrish, D. March 2, 2013

Edith Odom Parrish, age 86, of Newland passed away on March 2, 2013 at Cannon Memorial Hospital.

A native of Avery County, she was born May 14, 1926 a daughter of the late Anderson and Julia Grogan Odom.

She was a member of the Church of Christ in Banner Elk.

Edith was a school teacher and enjoyed gardening and flowers.

Along with her parents, Edith was preceded in death by her: husband, Harry Lee Parrish; brother, David Odom; sister, Pearlene Perry.

A devoted wife and mother, Edith has left to cherish her memory her: children, Harry Lee Parrish III of Newland, Cathy Haley and husband Tim of Charlotte, Steven Parrish and wife Diana of High Point; sister, Beulah Presnell of Lenoir; grandchildren, Dustin Sloop of High Point, Samuel Parrish of Greensboro, Meghan Parrish of Greensboro.

Funeral services for Edith Parrish will be conducted on Thursday, March 7th 2:00 p.m. at the Banner Elk Church of Christ with Pastor Don Iverson officiating. Interment will follow in the Fork Mountain Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services at the church.

Doyal James Fanklin, D. Feb. 28, 2013

Doyal James Franklin, 95, died Thursday, Feb. 28 at home surrounded by his family in Elgin Il. He was born in Montezuma NC to the late John and Llewellyn (Hood) Franklin on September 11, 1917. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Elsie, brothers Carter, Howard, John and Hood, sisters Maxine Vance, Kathleen Drake and nephew Richard W. Franklin of Knoxville TN and niece Susie Vance Kemper of Russellville, KY.

Doyal was the loving father and friend to his daughter Lynne Franklin and son-in-law Nick Kron of Elgin Il. and to his granddaughter Nicole Reitz and grandson-in-law Brian Reitz of San Diego CA. He treasured each day and found much joy in life’s simple pleasures, the morning sun rise, red geraniums, feeding the birds, petting the cat, being with his family, going out to dinner, and taking care of his house and yard. He was an advocate for environmental and wildlife preservation and imparted his wonderful sprit to his family and will be forever remembered for his love of life and those around him.

He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Mary Ann and Joe Williamson, of Lenoir City TN, Loretta and Gary Buchanan of Montezuma, Margie and Jimmy Kiser of Charlotte, Jane and Terry Galloway of Montezuma, Dwight Franklin of Linville, Bill and Lynda Drake, Sandra Stokes, and Patricia Searcy of Greenbriar TN, Diane Maltese of Cantonment FL, John Franklin of Sterling VA, Martha and Frank Tugman of Deep Gap, Gary and Sherry Franklin and Linda and Buford Hurst of Lenoir City TN, and Charles and Maxine O’Casek of El Paso TX, Bonnie Sue McCaskill of Picayune MS and a host of great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews and one great great great nephew and one great great great niece and many friends.

Funeral services for Doyal will be conducted at the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at 11am. Internment will follow at Montezuma Cemetery.

Barbara Baird Harmon, Feb. 27, 2013

Barbara Baird Harmon, age 72, of Newland passed away on February 27, 2013 at her residence.

A native of Avery County, she was born February 16, 1941 a daughter of the late Dexter and Clema Hicks Baird.

She was of the Baptist faith and had worked as a CNA, Cook and Ward Clerk for Cannon Memorial Hospital.

She enjoyed anything outdoors, gardening and bird watching.

Along with her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her: husband, William Carroll Harmon; sisters, Harleen Baird Ruppard, Lola Baird-Presnell; grandson, Chris Carpenter; granddaughter, Rebecca Harmon.

Known as “Nanny Barbara” to all, she has left to cherish her memory: daughters, Debra Rupard and husband Terry of Banner Elk, Donna Carpenter and husband Sherman of Newland, Brenda Harmon of Newland, Gwyn Harmon and companion Richard of Banner Elk; sons, Kenneth Banner and wife Kelly of Banner Elk, David Harmon and wife Kim of Hickory; 16 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; special friend, Robert “Shug” Cook of Elk Park.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 2nd from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with graveside services to follow in “Nanny Barbs Garden”.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be to the family, who respectfully request that food can be brought to the home of Brenda.

Sammy James Parlier, D. Feb. 27, 2013

Sammy James Parlier,age 67, of Montezuma passed away on February 27, 2013 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

A native of Avery County, he was born April 8, 1945 a son of the late Thurman and Hessie McGuire Parlier.

He was a member of Fall Creek Baptist Church.

Along with his parents, Sammy was preceded in death by his: wife, Judy Parlier; brother, JD Parlier.

Sammy has left to cherish his memory his: son, Bruce Parlier of the home; sisters, Jane Lynch of Pensicola, FL., Georgia Gilliam, Banner Elk, NC., Alma Shell, Nashville, TN; grandsons, Clinton Parlier, Richard James Parlier; several nieces and nephews.

Services for Sammy James Parlier will be conducted at a later date.
