Rev. Odell Smith, D. March 24, 2013
The Reverend Edward O’dell Smith, age 84, of Banner Elk, passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2013.
He was the son of the late Eva O’dell and Haskell Volley Smith. Mr. Smith attended public schools in Bristol, Tennessee, was a graduate of Emory and Henry College, Emory, Virginia and Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Virginia. Mr. Smith served in the United States Army; was an overseas missionary for the Presbyterian Church in Brazil; pastored the First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson City, Tennessee; was the Dean of Students and Professor of Theology and Religion at
Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina. He was an active community volunteer, with Meals on Wheels and had served as the Chaplain for Cannon Memorial Hospital for many years.
Upon retirement from Lees-McRae College, Mr. Smith was pastor of Arbor Dale Presbyterian Church, Banner Elk, North Carolina.
Mr. Smith is survived by daughters Mimi Smith Gossett of Newland, NC and Carrie Smith Morningstar and husband Jonathan of Mauldin, SC; sons Mark O. Smith and wife Kathy of Roanoke, VA; Joshua H. Smith and wife Lisa of Montezuma, NC; Patrick Sean Smith and wife Tracy of Hillsborough, NC; granddaughters Maggie Smith Holland and husband Zach, Mason
Smith, Emma Smith and Erin Smith; grandsons Hunter Gossett, Max Smith, Ethan Smith, Spencer Smith, Riley Morningstar and Jonah Morningstar.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-three years Patricia Rees Smith; his sisters, Nora O’dell Smith, Patricia Smith Adams and grandson Jackson Spencer Gossett.
A memorial service will be held Friday, March 29th at 2:00 p. m. at the Banner Elk Presbyterian Church. The Reverend Dr. Tee Gatewood will be officiating the service.

Danny ‘Tudy’ McGuire, D. March 23, 2013
Danny “Tudy” McGuire, age 50, of Banner Elk passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2013.
A native of Avery County, he was born August 3, 1962 a son of the late Jay Holye and Pansy Rebecca Lusk McGuire.
Along with his parents, Danny was preceded in death by his brother, Gaylan Lynn McGuire.
Danny has left to cherish his memory his: daughter, Crystal Passmore and husband Andrew of Morganton; granddaughters, Lacee and Raylee; step-son, Curtis Walker and wife Faith of Morganton; sisters, Kathy M. Horney and husband Leroy of Morganton, Martha Gwyn and husband Howard of Dallas, MC; brothers, Dean McGuire and wife Earline of Banner Elk, Michael McGuire and companion Frances Porter of Banner Elk, Gerald McGuire and wife Lisa of Roan Mtn., TN.; very special friend and former wife of 23 years, Wanda McGuire of Morganton.
Funeral services for Danny Hoyle McGuire will be conducted on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at 7:00 pm at the Grandfather Chapel. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until the service hour.
Isaac Ammons, D. March 23, 2013
Isaac “Ike” Ammons,age 88, of Newland passed away on March 23, 2013 at Roan Highlands Nursing Center.
A native of HorryCounty, South Carolina, he was born September 26, 1924 a son of the late Rosea and Dessie Allen Ammons.
He a United States Navy Veteran serving in World War II. Mr. Ammons was retired from the Federal Government.
Isaac has left to cherish his memory his wife of 66 years, Jane Sarvis Ammons of the home; son, Gene Ammons, and his wife, Sandra, of Linville, NC; grandchildren, Sange Ammons of Clover, SC, Jeffery Ammons, and his wife, Lesley, of Goldsboro, NC, Gregory Ammons, and his wife, Kerrie, of Columbia, SC, Mark Ammons, and his wife, Kayla, of Anderson, SC, Melissa Beeco of Pickens, SC; great grandchildren, Drew Sullivan, Sarah Jane Ammons, Emilee Ammons, Hannah Kate Ammons, Lilly Ammons, Bettix Beeco, Carson Ammons, Maribeth Ammons; brothers, Dean Ammons of Aynor, SC, and W.L. Ammons, and his wife, Rae, of Myrtle Beach, SC.
Services for Isaac “Ike” Ammons will be conducted on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at the Hillcrest Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel starting at 2:30 p.m.
