Betty Guinn Cable, age 82, of Elk Park passed away on March 17, 2014 at her residence. 

A native of Avery County, she was born March 31, 1931 a daughter of the late Gurney and Nola Daniels Guinn. 

Betty retired from the USPS where she was the Elk Park Post Office Clerk for 30 years. 

She attended Elk River Baptist Church and enjoyed canning, flower gardening and sitting on her back porch reading. 

Along with her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her: brother, Harry Guinn; son, William David Cable. 

Betty has left to cherish her memory her: husband, William Cable of the home; daughter, Deborah Lowder and husband Jack; sons, Kenny Cable and wife Kim, Michael Cable and wife Mary; daughter-in-law, Debbie Cable all of Elk Park; 9 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren. 

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 18th from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

James Ellis Bennett, 81, of the Land Harbor Community, Newland, NC passed away on Friday, March 14, 2014. 

He was born in Cross Anchor, SC, April 24, 1932, a son of the late Hoke Patton Bennett and the late Dorothy Harris Bennett. 
After attending the University of South Carolina, he served his country as a Cryptographer in the United States Army, stationed in Germany. He retired from the Celanese Corporation, where he worked as a Systems Analyst Manager. 

Ellis was a kind and considerate man, always looking for ways to help his friends and family. He served on several committees at Linville Land Harbor, including the Four Seasons Club, the Fishing Committee, and also on the Property Owners Association Board of Directors. He was very active with Habitat for Humanity and also Volunteer Avery. 

Mr. Bennett served as the Council Chairman for the Newland United Methodist Church. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Barney Workman Bennett. 

Survivors include his wife, Jean Vaughn Bennett of the home; daughters, Cathy Sealy, and husband, Mark, of Charlotte, NC, Nicole Lippard, and husband, Noah, of Boone, NC; son, Jamie Bennett of Tega Cay, SC; sister, Mary Gaston of Woodruff, SC; six grandchildren, Kris Hammitt, Hamilton Bennett, Chelsea Norris, Susan Burson, Casey Sealy, Brodie Lippard; five great grandchildren, Lily Burson, Bristol Norris, Brooklyn Norris, Emily Hammitt and Anna Hammitt. 

Services for Ellis Bennett will be held on Friday, March 21, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at the Newland United Methodist Church, with Dr. Louis Woodard and Rev. Brent Price officiating. The family will host a reception at the Linville Land Harbor Golf House immediately following the services on Friday.
